What they need

We are looking for experienced, skilled, and dynamic staff who have worked in either union organising and/or campaigning to join our Queensland organising team.

The Transport Workers’ Union (TWU) is one of Australia’s leading campaigning trade unions, holding some of the biggest companies in the world to account over their treatment of workers, such as Qantas, Amazon and the supermarket giants.

The TWU has cemented its role as a powerful voice for aviation workers, playing an integral role in rebuilding the industry, fighting for a reset of decent jobs above and below the wing, and getting Virgin Australia back in the air after administration. Our members achieved a historic victory against Qantas in the Federal Court, Full Court of Appeal and High Court over the illegal outsourcing of 1700 workers and is gearing up for a historic fight to reset industry standards and campaign for a Safe and Secure Skies Commission.

We have recently won a groundbreaking legal system to set minimum standards in road transport, including world-first rights for gig economy workers like food delivery riders, rideshare drivers and AmazonFlex parcel couriers. This is an exciting time to join our union as we activate our membership to utilise these new precedent-setting laws and lift standards right across the industry.

Are you interested in fighting multinational corporations, organising the workers who carry our country and ensuring safer skies and roads for everyone in Australia? We run comprehensive campaigns to give transport workers a powerful voice in the workplace, in Parliament, and in the community.

Roles

The team is made up of experienced organisers, campaigners, and industrial officers who work together to create and implement campaigns across the union. We are looking to add campaigners and/or organisers to the team across both road and aviation, so if you think you meet the criteria below, we would love to hear from you:

  • Drive organising and growth strategies on the ground.
  • Coordinate integrated industrial and organising plans.
  • Support the training and development of delegates and members.
  • Support, develop and mentor organisers and other campaign officials.
  • Identify campaign leverage and opportunities to advance the interests of members.
  • Liaise with staff in other departments of the union to achieve success for the campaign.

THE SUCCESSFUL APPLICANT WILL IDEALLY HAVE:

  • A proven track record as a union organiser or campaigner (preferred but not essential). Experience with supply chain campaigning, training or development a plus.
  • Experience in integrated organising and industrial plans that deliver power and growth.
  • The ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • A willingness to understand and implement union growth strategies.
  • Sound communications skills, including demonstrated ability to write reports and draft internal and external communications.
  • Sound IT skills
  • A commitment to labour values.
  • The role will be based in our Murarrie office in Brisbane. Some travel may be required.

Salary will depend on experience. The TWU is an equal opportunity employer and provides a number of benefits to employees, including:

·      15% superannuation

·      20% leave loading

·      A Paid Day Off Scheme

·      Other entitlements

To apply, forward a Cover Letter and CV to Amy Proffitt, by email: [email protected] or apply online.
