What they need

Calian / Deloitte is a third-party service provider contracted by the Canadian Armed Forces Recruiting Group (CFRG) to provide information and candidate-sourcing support for CAF career opportunities and entry programs.

As an external contractor for the CAF, we are actively looking for qualified physicians to join the Canadian Armed Forces as Orthopedic Surgeons (Medical Specialists).

Orthopedic Surgeons receive competitive medical-specialist compensation and benefits package, which may include health, dental and vision coverage, pension benefits, paid vacation and professional development opportunities. A signing bonus may be available to eligible applicants joining the Regular Force. Conditions apply.

Overview:

As members of the military, Orthopedic Surgeons belong to the Medical Specialist occupation within the Canadian Armed Forces. They provide trauma-focused orthopedic surgical care to CAF members in Canada and during international operations, including peace-support and humanitarian missions.

Orthopedic Surgeons are clinical leaders within CAF Health Services. They lead multidisciplinary surgical and emergency-care teams and serve as mentors and educators to Medical Officers, Nursing Officers, Physician Assistants, Medical Technicians, Operating Room Technicians and Diagnostic Technicians.

CAF Orthopedic Surgeons maintain their clinical skills and readiness by holding staff positions within civilian tertiary-care hospitals across Canada. They also participate in military training, field exercises, education, research and potential domestic or international deployments.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide orthopedic consultations and care to CAF members in Canada.
  • Lead surgical and emergency-care teams responsible for treating injured and ill patients in Canada and deployed settings.
  • Assess and manage fractures, musculoskeletal trauma and other orthopedic injuries.
  • Educate and advise multidisciplinary Health Services teams on trauma and orthopedic care.
  • Mentor Medical Officers, Nursing Officers, Physician Assistants and other Health Services personnel.
  • Maintain a high level of orthopedic surgical competence and clinical currency through a position within a civilian health-care facility.
  • Participate in military-skills training, field exercises, clinical education and operational-readiness activities.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of health-care policies within the CAF.

Requirements:

To be considered for direct entry as a CAF Orthopedic Surgeon, candidates must:

  • Hold a medical degree from a recognized institution.
  • Be a member of, or hold recognized certification from, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Orthopedic Surgery.
  • Hold an unrestricted licence to practise Orthopedic Surgery in a Canadian province or territory.
  • Maintain professional good standing and current clinical and operative competence.
  • Meet the CAF’s enrolment, medical, physical-fitness, security-screening and officer-suitability requirements.

Fellowship training or experience in orthopedic trauma and other areas relevant to military medicine may be considered an asset. Eligibility and current CAF specialty requirements will be confirmed by a Health Services Specialist Recruiter.
