What they need
About the Company
We are a Long Island-based durable medical equipment (DME) provider specializing in custom-fabricated orthotic and prosthetic devices for patients across Long Island and the five boroughs of New York City. We partner with physicians, hospitals, rehabilitation facilities, and skilled nursing centers to deliver individualized, evidence-based care — from evaluation and casting through fabrication, fitting, and long-term follow-up. Our practitioners work at the point of care, combining clinical excellence with the responsiveness of a locally owned provider.
Position Summary
The Orthotist-Prosthetist independently evaluates, designs, fabricates (or oversees fabrication of), fits, and adjusts custom orthoses and prostheses in accordance with physician prescriptions and each patient's functional goals. The practitioner manages a full clinical caseload across the company's service area, documents care to payer and accreditation standards, and serves as a trusted clinical resource to referring providers and patients. This role suits a certified practitioner who is two to three years beyond residency and ready to carry an autonomous caseload with mentorship and growth opportunities.
Key Responsibilities
- Patient evaluation: Assess patients' physical, functional, and rehabilitative needs; review physician prescriptions and medical history; take measurements, impressions, casts, and scans required to design custom devices.
- Device design & fabrication: Design orthoses and prostheses and select appropriate materials and componentry; fabricate devices directly or direct and supervise technicians, ensuring quality, fit, and biomechanical soundness.
- Fitting & delivery: Fit, align, and adjust devices; verify comfort, function, and safety; educate patients and caregivers on proper use, wear schedules, and maintenance.
- Follow-up care: Provide ongoing adjustments, repairs, and modifications as the patient's condition changes; monitor outcomes and modify the plan of care accordingly.
- Clinical documentation: Complete timely, accurate, and compliant clinical notes, detailed written orders, and delivery documentation supporting medical necessity and reimbursement (Medicare/Medicaid, commercial, and managed-care L-code billing).
- Care coordination: Communicate with referring physicians, therapists, case managers, and facility staff; provide clinical recommendations and build referral relationships across the service area.
- Compliance & quality: Adhere to ABC/BOC scope of practice, HIPAA, OSHA, infection-control, and accreditation (e.g., ABC/BOC facility) standards; participate in quality-assurance and outcomes tracking.
- Territory coverage: Travel to patient homes, hospitals, SNFs, physician offices, and satellite locations throughout Long Island and the five boroughs as scheduled.
Required Qualifications
- Master's degree in Orthotics and Prosthetics from a program accredited by NCOPE (National Commission on Orthotic and Prosthetic Education).
- Completion of an NCOPE-accredited residency in orthotics and/or prosthetics.
- Active certification from the American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics & Pedorthics (ABC) — or BOC equivalent — as CO, CP, or (preferred) CPO.
- Two to three years of clinical experience beyond residency managing an independent caseload.
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation for regional travel.
- Working knowledge of Medicare/Medicaid and commercial O&P documentation and medical-necessity requirements.
- Strong clinical, interpersonal, and communication skills; empathy and professionalism with patients and referral sources.
Preferred Qualifications
- Dual certification (CPO) and experience across a broad range of orthotic and prosthetic device types.
- Familiarity with CAD/CAM design, digital scanning, and current componentry (microprocessor knees, myoelectric systems, custom bracing).
- Prior experience in a DME or private O&P practice setting.
- Bilingual ability (Spanish or other languages common to the NYC/Long Island patient population) is a plus.
Licensure Note
New York State does not currently maintain a separate state license for orthotists and prosthetists; ABC (or BOC) certification is the recognized professional credential and is required for this role. Practitioners must maintain certification in good standing and complete required continuing education.
Physical & Work Environment
- Ability to lift and maneuver up to 50 lbs; stand, bend, kneel, and use hand tools for extended periods.
- Manual dexterity and fine-motor precision for casting, fabrication, and adjustments.
- Combination of clinic/lab, facility, and in-home patient environments; regional driving.
