What they need
Overnight Gemma House Manager
The Gemma Project is seeking a compassionate, dependable, and trauma-responsive
Overnight House Manager to help create a safe, supportive, and healing environment for
women transitioning from incarceration back into the community.
The Gemma Project is a female-led nonprofit dedicated to providing and promoting the
national creation of gender-responsive reentry programming for incarcerated and
formerly incarcerated women. We believe healing occurs through safety, dignity,
accountability, relationships, and consistent support.
Justice impacted individuals are strongly encouraged to apply.
Physical Requirements & Schedule:
The Overnight position is designed to provide consistent structure, support, and supervision
at the end of the residents’ day. The Overnight House Manager serves as the central point of
contact within the home, fostering a safe, welcoming, and trauma-responsive environment for
residents while they navigate daily responsibilities and work toward their Wellness & Reentry
Plan goals.
The Overnight House Manager's primary work schedule is 4:00 PM to 11:00PM. This position
is an overnight position in which a portion of the shift the Overnight House Manager and
the residents will be asleep. During overnight hours, the Overnight House Manager is
off-duty but expected to remain on-site and available to respond to urgent resident
needs. When residents are asleep and no active duties require attention, the Overnight
House Manager may rest in designated private staff sleeping quarters. The night shift
begins at 4:00PM beginning with communication exchange with the Day House Manager.
Relationship with the Day Time House Manager
Although each position has distinct responsibilities, both House Managers are equal
partners in creating the Gemma House culture. Together they model the values of
dignity, respect, accountability, compassion, and hope. Every interaction—whether
assisting with breakfast, resolving a disagreement, sharing an evening meal, celebrating a
success, or responding to a crisis—is viewed as an opportunity to reinforce healthy
relationships and support each resident's journey toward permanent housing and
independent living.
This position requires access to sensitive and protected data and therefore may require
but is not limited to completion of Live Scan fingerprinting, and Tuberculosis testing prior
to hire. Ability to safely respond to emergencies. Ability to climb stairs, conduct periodic
house walkthroughs, and occasionally assist residents with lifting or moving items. Current
California driver's license, registration, and insurance are also required.
The schedule may include weekends, holidays, and rotating coverage as needed.
How you'll fit in:
The Gemma overnight House Manager’s primary role is to maintain a safe, structured, and
supportive environment for women transitioning from incarceration back into the
community. The person in this role understands that reentry is complex and that healing,
accountability, and stability develop over time through consistent support, clear
expectations, and strong relationships.
You will thrive in this role if you are someone who can balance compassion with structure.
You understand the importance of maintaining healthy boundaries while building trust
with residents who may have experienced significant trauma, system involvement, and
instability. You are comfortable addressing challenges directly, modeling accountability,
and supporting residents as they learn to navigate responsibilities such as employment,
supervision requirements, and independent living.
This position requires someone who is collaborative and solutions-oriented. You will work
closely with Gemma staff, probation and parole partners, and community providers to
ensure residents have access to resources and support as they move toward greater
stability. You are organized, communicative, and able to manage both the day-to-day
operations of the house and the relational dynamics that arise within a shared living
