Packaging and Labelling Manager

Eric Lyons has been a family butcher since 1903, five generations in. We supply our own shops, our website and a growing wholesale side, all from our new production facility at Oakland. We only sell UK meat, and everything we make has our family name on it.

We're looking for someone to run packaging and labelling. You'll check, pack and label every product before it leaves the building, and you'll help us change how we do it.

This is more than doing the job

We want to improve all of our labelling and packaging, and we're open to any ideas. That could mean how a product looks on the shelf, the materials we use, what it costs per pack, or how fast and accurately we work. We're also planning to buy machinery to make packing and labelling more efficient. Once you've learned how the role works, we'd like you to lead that project.

What you'll be doing

Accountable for every product heading out

  • You'll be the last check before any product leaves Oakland for the shops, online customers or wholesale
  • Making sure every pack is correct, sealed, labelled, coded and presented to our standard
  • Stopping anything that isn't right, and recording why it wasn't

Chilled down and ready to pack

  • Working closely with the chefs and the butchery team so every product is properly chilled before it's packed
  • Checking and recording cooling times and core temperatures
  • Planning the packing day around the production plan so nothing waits around and nothing gets rushed

Labelling (the skilled part of the job)

  • Producing accurate labels for every product: name, ingredients, allergens, weight, price, use-by date, batch code and storage instructions
  • Checking every label against the approved product specification
  • Keeping us fully compliant with food labelling law, including allergen labelling for prepacked for direct sale (Natasha's Law)
  • Keeping traceability records complete so any product can be traced back through production

Packaging

  • Vacuum packing, tray sealing and packing raw and cooked products, ready meals, pies and pre-packed lines
  • Keeping packaging and label stock organised, and ordering in good time so we never run out

Leading the team

  • Managing and training the staff and agency workers who pack for you, so the work gets done right first time
  • Setting clear standards and checking they're followed every shift
  • Working with the Goods In / Goods Out Logistics Operator and the Delivery Driver so orders are packed, labelled and ready on time, including early van departures

Improving how we do it

  • Bringing ideas to improve labels, packaging, presentation, cost and waste
  • Once you're settled, leading the machinery project: researching options, arranging trials, putting costs together, and then installing the machines and training the team to use them

What we're looking for

Essential

  • Experience of food labelling in a food production, butchery or manufacturing setting
  • A good working knowledge of allergens, date coding and traceability
  • A very high level of accuracy, because one wrong label is a problem
  • Experience organising or supervising other people
  • Comfortable with early starts and a cold working environment
  • Level 2 Food Hygiene, or willing to get it straight away

Desirable

  • Experience with label printing software and weigh-price labellers
  • Experience with vacuum packers, tray sealers or other packaging machinery
  • Level 3 Food Safety or HACCP training
  • Experience of buying or bringing in new equipment

Hours and pay

£13.00 to £13.50 an hour depending on experience, around 42.5 hours a week, mostly Monday to Friday, with early starts and extra hours at busy times.

How to apply

Apply through Indeed with your CV and a few lines on your labelling experience, plus one idea you'd bring to packaging or labelling.
