Location: Central Islip, NY

Position Overview

International Sports Institute (ISI) Academy is seeking an engaging, knowledgeable, and dedicated Part-Time Math & Science Teacher to provide high-quality instruction to student-athletes in grades 9–11.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced educator who enjoys working in a small, personalized academic environment and is committed to helping motivated students reach their full potential. The successful candidate will teach appropriate high school mathematics and science courses while developing students’ problem-solving, critical-thinking, quantitative reasoning, and scientific inquiry skills.

The position is scheduled Monday through Friday, 11:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m., making it particularly well suited for a collegiate adjunct professor, community college instructor, partially retired or retired educator, doctoral candidate with teaching experience, or another experienced educator seeking a consistent daytime teaching opportunity.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver engaging, rigorous, and student-centered instruction in mathematics and science for grades 9–11.
  • Teach courses based on student needs and qualifications, which may include Algebra, Geometry, Algebra II, Biology, Chemistry, Physical Science, and other appropriate high school-level courses.
  • Plan and deliver lessons aligned with ISI Academy curriculum requirements and appropriate academic standards.
  • Differentiate instruction to address varying academic abilities, learning styles, and individual student needs.
  • Provide individualized and small-group instruction as appropriate.
  • Create meaningful assignments, projects, quizzes, tests, and other assessments to measure student learning and progress.
  • Maintain accurate grades, attendance, academic records, and other required documentation.
  • Provide timely and constructive feedback to students regarding academic performance, progress, and areas for improvement.
  • Help students strengthen problem-solving, quantitative reasoning, scientific inquiry, study habits, and critical-thinking skills.
  • Provide appropriate academic support to students who miss class due to athletic competitions, travel, or other approved Academy activities.
  • Collaborate with teachers, coaches, administrators, and academic support staff to support the overall development of each student-athlete.
  • Participate in faculty meetings, parent conferences, student progress meetings, and other Academy activities as required.
  • Foster a positive classroom culture built on accountability, curiosity, effort, respect, and academic integrity.

Teaching in a Student-Athlete Environment

ISI Academy offers an educational model designed specifically for students who are pursuing ambitious athletic goals while maintaining a strong academic program.

Our teachers understand that student-athletes face unique scheduling and time-management demands. The successful candidate will provide the structure, consistency, flexibility, and accountability necessary to help students manage those demands successfully.

Flexibility does not mean lowering academic expectations. Rather, ISI Academy seeks educators who can maintain high academic standards while creating an environment in which student-athletes can thrive both in the classroom and in their sport.

Qualifications Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Science, Education, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong knowledge of high school-level mathematics and/or science.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively teach students with varying academic abilities and learning styles.
  • Strong organizational and classroom-management skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a small, collaborative academic environment.

Preferred

  • Master’s degree or advanced graduate study.
  • Prior teaching experience at the high school, college, university, or community college level.
  • Experience providing tutoring, individualized instruction, or small-group instruction.
  • Experience working with student-athletes or students balancing demanding extracurricular commitments.
  • Demonstrated commitment to mentoring and supporting students academically and personally.

An Ideal Opportunity for Experienced Educators

The daytime schedule makes this position particularly attractive to educators seeking a meaningful teaching role that can complement other professional or academic commitments.

ISI Academy welcomes applications from:

  • College and university adjunct professors seeking additional daytime teaching opportunities.
  • Community college instructors whose primary teaching responsibilities are in the evening.
  • Partially retired or recently retired teachers and professors who would like to remain active in education on a reduced schedule.
  • Doctoral candidates in education, mathematics, science, engineering, or related fields who have relevant teaching experience.
  • Experienced educators interested in contributing to a smaller, innovative, and student-centered academic environment.

The 11:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m., Monday–Friday schedule may allow qualified educators to combine this position with evening college or community college teaching, research, graduate study, or other professional activities.

Desired Characteristics

The ideal candidate is:

  • Student-centered and genuinely passionate about teaching.
  • Academically rigorous while approachable and supportive.
  • Comfortable teaching multiple subjects within the mathematics and science disciplines.
  • Flexible and adaptable to the needs of student-athletes.
  • An effective communicator, mentor, and collaborator.
  • Organized, dependable, and accountable.
  • Comfortable working with motivated high school students in a small-school environment.
  • Committed to maintaining high academic expectations.
  • Excited by the opportunity to contribute to a growing and innovative educational model.
