Part-Time Music Director

Position summary

The Part-Time Music Director shall be responsible for carrying forward the high standard of music ministry at Broad Street United Methodist Church. The Music Director will cultivate the musical and spiritual gifts of the church’s musicians and encourage all choral and instrumental participants to understand their role as worship leaders. The Music Director should bring creativity and enthusiasm in the music ministry while building positive choir morale and a strong sense of community. As a member of the church staff and a leader within the congregation, the Music Director is expected to model Christian character, collaboration and professionalism.

Primary duties and responsibilities

• Collaborate with the Pastor and other staff members in traditional worship services, including hymns, choral and instrumental music and special programs.
• Select music appropriate to the liturgical season and the themes of worship, in consultation with the Pastor and Worship Committee.
• Develop, rehearse and direct the following ensembles:
• Chancel Choir
• Handbell Choir
• Children’s Choir
• Direct the Chancel Choir and Handbell Choir for the Traditional 11 AM worship service and for additional seasonal services including Easter and Christmas.
• Coordinate and rehearse with vocal soloists and instrumentalists participating in worship.
• Bring creativity and enthusiasm to rehearsals, worship and special programs. Foster positive choir morale by creating an encouraging, welcoming and collaborative environment.
• Work with the Children’s Director in developing a children’s music ministry. The goal is for children to participate in the Well and Traditional worship services approximately once each month. Rehearsal times will be coordinated with the Children’s Director.
• Recruit, encourage and support participants in the church’s choirs and other musical ministries. A member of the Worship Committee will serve as a liaison and provide support for the Music Director as needed.
• Attend staff meetings and consult regularly with the Pastor and Worship Committee regarding Worship and Music Ministry.
• Provide music for funerals involving church members when available. This responsibility is included in the Music Director’s regular salary. If the Music Director is unavailable, another accompanist may be secured. First option for wedding music is in the responsibility of the Church Accompanist and if unavailable another accompanist may be secured.
• Maintain, update and expand the church’s music library, including an accurate catalog of its contents.
• Maintain accurate records and all necessary documentation to ensure that music used in worship, rehearsals, performances and church programs is properly covered by the church’s licenses and complies with copyright requirements.
• Work a minimum of 24 hours regular weekday hours per week. These hours will include worship planning, staff and committee meetings, music preparation, personal practice, rehearsals, office responsibilities, leading the traditional service and choir and handbell practice on Wednesday evenings.
• Assist with the Well 9 AM worship service when requested. Additional compensation will be provided for this responsibility.

Pay: $18,000.00 - $24,000.00 per year
