What they need

The Field Support Technician is an on-call, as-needed contract resource who provides onsite technical assistance at our client's customer locations throughout Portland and southern Maine. This is not a full-time role; assignments are scheduled based on client onsite needs. The technician completes approved field tasks such as workstation setup, hardware replacement, cabling, equipment checks, and remote-hands work, and documents the results clearly for the Managed Services team. The technician works from the assigned ticket, checklist, or technical direction provided by our client. When a task requires a change or decision outside that scope, the technician stops and escalates rather than making an unapproved change.

What You Will Do

  • Deploy and physically set up laptops, desktops, monitors, docks, keyboards, mice, and other standard workstation equipment.
  • Perform approved hardware swaps and replacements, including workstations, peripherals, network devices, and other client equipment.
  • Connect, disconnect, label, patch, and trace basic network and workstation cabling.
  • Install or replace switches, access points, firewalls, or other network equipment when a documented plan and technical direction are provided by our client.
  • Provide remote-hands support for our client's engineers, including visual inspection, console access, cable checks, power cycling, reseating equipment, and reporting onsite conditions.
  • Assist with ISP, carrier, copier, hardware, and other vendor visits when local technical presence is required.
  • Perform equipment and asset inventory, capture serial numbers and labels, take clear photos, and document device and location details.
  • Assist with printers, basic peripherals, conference-room equipment, and other common onsite device issues within documented procedures.
  • Perform basic onsite troubleshooting to confirm power, cabling, connectivity, hardware state, and obvious physical faults.
  • Move, stage, pack, unpack, ship, or receive IT equipment when included in the assigned work.
  • Document completed work, findings, photos, serial numbers, and anything requiring follow-up in the assigned ticket or documentation system provided by our client.
  • Stop and escalate when the requested work differs from the approved scope, introduces risk, or requires a technical decision that has not been provided.

Required Skills and Experience

  • 2+ years of hands-on desktop support, field support, MSP support, or comparable IT experience.
  • Comfortable setting up and troubleshooting Windows workstations, common peripherals, and basic macOS workstation issues.
  • Basic understanding of TCP/IP networking and the ability to identify common network equipment such as switches, access points, firewalls, patch panels, modems, and routers.
  • Hands-on experience with Ethernet cabling, patching, cable tracing, and basic physical network troubleshooting.
  • Ability to follow written procedures and remote technical direction accurately without making unapproved changes.
  • Strong onsite professionalism and the ability to work directly in client offices with minimal supervision.
  • Clear written communication and documentation, including accurate notes and useful photos.
  • Reliable transportation and ability to travel throughout Portland and southern Maine, including short notice assignments when available.
  • Ability to safely lift and move typical workstation and network equipment up to approximately 25 pounds.

Preferred Experience

  • Previous MSP or multi-client field-services experience.
  • CompTIA A+ or equivalent practical experience.
  • Network+ or equivalent practical networking knowledge.
  • Experience with Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Entra.
  • Experience with RMM / remote-support tools such as NinjaOne or comparable platforms.
  • Experience supporting office moves, network equipment replacement, or vendor cutovers under remote engineering direction.

Working Expectations

  • Arrive within the agreed service window and communicate promptly if travel or site-access issues affect arrival.
  • Confirm the assigned task and scope before making changes.
  • Stay reachable to the assigned contact from our client while onsite when remote direction is required.
  • Do not make firewall, server, identity, security-policy, or architecture changes without explicit direction and approval from our client.
  • Leave the site in a clean and supportable state, with cables, equipment, and work areas organized appropriately.
  • Complete notes, evidence, and follow-up information promptly after the visit.

What Success Looks Like

  • Field assignments are completed reliably without unnecessary repeat visits.
  • Our client receives clear documentation and useful evidence of what was completed onsite.
  • The technician stays within scope and escalates technical decisions appropriately.
  • Clients receive professional, dependable onsite support.
  • Appropriate onsite work can be completed without requiring an internal engineer from our client to travel to the site.
