Part-time Youth Nutrition Program Assistant

For The Better Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that improves the lives of teens and adolescents through health education. Our Better Health Program teaches nutrition education and cooking instruction to middle and high school students, helping them build lifelong healthy habits and reduce obesity and related health risks in communities of color.

The Role

We're seeking a dependable, energetic Program Assistant to support our after-school sessions. You'll help students learn to read nutrition labels, understand serving sizes, and cook quick, nutritious meals.

Responsibilities

• Set up and break down the classroom and cooking stations
• Assist the lead instructor during nutrition lessons and cooking classes
• Supervise students and reinforce kitchen safety and hygiene
• Help students with hands-on activities and encourage participation
• Take attendance and keep participant records
• Shop for, organize, and track food and supplies
• Support recruitment and communication with families

Qualifications

• Experience working with teens or youth (required)
• Interest in nutrition, health education, or cooking
• Strong communication skills and a positive, patient manner
• Reliable, organized, and comfortable working in a team
• Food handler's certification (or willingness to obtain)
• Bilingual a plus
• Background check and any required clearances for working with minors

Details

• Schedule: About 10 hours/week, after school (Mondays 3-7 pm and Fridays 6-9 pm, 3 hours administrative work)
• Location: Shell bank middle school and flatbush YMCA
• Compensation: $17
