Passive Safety Lab Engineering Technician

What to Expect

The Austin Passive Safety Test Team executes, analyzes, and reports on vehicle tests for engineering development, regulatory certification, and consumer protection crash testing. This role supports the team by preparing test vehicles, installing instrumentation, maintaining equipment, and ensuring high-quality test setups in a collaborative laboratory environment.

What You'll Do

• Prepare test vehicles to match required configurations according to written and oral procedures while maintaining quality and repeatability
• Install data acquisition equipment including accelerometers, strain gauges, load cells, and other sensors
• Install and remove vehicle test fixtures, lab equipment, and ballast weights as specified in test requests
• Maintain sensor library, perform sensor repairs, and coordinate calibration activities for all instrumentation
• Design and fabricate custom brackets, wire harnesses, and fixtures
• Set up and operate high-speed cameras, lighting, and lenses for test imaging requirements
• Maintain and repair test equipment and laboratory facilities to ensure operational readiness

What You'll Bring

• Associate degree in engineering or automotive technology, or equivalent experience
• Experience diagnosing, repairing, and replacing components on passenger vehicles
• Proficiency with hand and power tools, shop equipment, and basic fabrication skills
• Ability to lift 50 lbs and work in confined spaces inside test vehicles
• Valid driver’s license and ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
• Proficiency with computers for diagnostics, reporting, and use of Microsoft Office applications
• Ability to manage multiple priorities, organize workload, and meet deadlines
