PCS Selection & Integration(BESS)

The Incumbent will be responsible for-

Job Purpose-

To lead the selection, evaluation, and integration of Power Conversion Systems (PCS) for BESS projects, ensuring optimal performance, compliance with grid standards, and seamless integration with batteries and EMS systems

Role Accountabilities-

PCS Selection & Technical Evaluation-

1. Define PCS strategy & architecture (central vs string, LV/MV design)

2. Lead technical evaluation & selection of PCS solutions

3. Drive vendor management & technical alignment

4. Evaluate and select suitable PCS (bidirectional inverters) based on project requirements.

Review vendor datasheets, control architecture, and protection schemes.

System Design & Integration-

1. Lead integration of PCS with battery systems (Li-ion/LFP), BMS, MV systems, EMS/PPC & SCADA

2. Define and standardize:

• Control architecture (PCS PPC EMS Grid operator)
• Interface protocols (Modbus, IEC 61850, OPC UA)

3. Ensure compatibility between PCS, transformers, switchgear, and grid connection points.

4. Develop system architecture, single-line diagrams (SLD), and interface requirements.

Collaborate cross-functionally with product, execution, and business teams to support optimized PCS selection, tender/RFP submissions, and technical due diligence for project acquisitions.

Grid Compliance & Performance-

1. Ensure PCS meets grid codes (CEA, IGEC, IEEE, IEC, utility-specific requirements). while supporting grid services (reactive power, frequency, LVRT/HVRT) and leading interconnection approvals, synchronization, and regulatory coordination.

2. Support grid studies, modelling, commissioning & performance validation

• Load flow
• Harmonic analysis
• Short-circuit analysis

Transient response

Vendor Management-

1. Coordinate with PCS OEMs

2. Manage technical discussions, FAT/SAT, and performance validation.

3. Support contract finalization with technical inputs.

Evaluate vendor deliverables including control logic, protection schemes, and compliance.

Project Execution Support-

1. Work closely with EPC, commissioning, and site teams.

2. Provide inputs during:

• Installation
• Testing
• Commissioning

3. Troubleshoot integration and performance issues.

4. Feed learnings back into product design improvements

Documentation & Standards-

1. Prepare and review:

• Technical specifications
• Design documents
• Integration manuals

2. Ensure adherence to international standards (IEC, IEEE, UL).

Skills & Capabilities Required-

Strong understanding of:

• Power electronics and inverter systems for Utility scale BESS
• Power quality, harmonics, and protection
• Grid integration of renewable/BESS
• Plant-level controls EMS/SCADA/PPC systems
• MV integration (11kV / 33kV / 66kV and above)

Knowledge of:

• Battery technologies (LFP/NMC preferred)
• Grid codes and utility regulations

Software tools:

• ETAP / PSCAD / PSS-E / MATLAB / Simulink (preferred)
• Excellent stakeholder coordination skills
• Preferred experience in large-scale BESS (>50 MW), hybrid RE + storage projects, with exposure to grid-forming inverters and weak grid/islanded operations.
