Your experience matters here

Seaview is excited to be launching a new service as part of the Next Steps Programme, and we’re looking for two Peer Navigators to help shape it from the start.

This role is built around lived experience. You’ll draw on your own journey to connect with people facing multiple disadvantage, especially people who may not be in touch with services or don’t feel services are for them. You’ll meet people where they are, build trust at their pace, and work alongside them as they explore what support looks like for them.

SUMMARY

Peer Navigators support individuals facing multiple disadvantage and work as members of a multidisciplinary team (MDT) on an outreach basis. Working as part of the new Next Steps Programme, Peer Navigators will provide personalised support for people facing multiple disadvantage, and utilise their own lived experiences to relate, communicate, engage, and support individuals as well as being an inspirational role model.

They will build links within the community and create strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including community-based groups.

They will gain feedback from individuals they support, both formally and informally, to feed into the programme to inform the system change work.

They will be offered ongoing support relevant to the role, and be offered training, professional development and reflective practice supervision.

What you’ll be doing

  • Reaching out to people in the community and getting to know what matters to them
  • Creating friendly, informal spaces for people to connect, both one-to-one and in groups
  • Working as part of a multidisciplinary team to provide coordinated, personalised support
  • Building strong links with community groups and local partners
  • Gathering feedback from the people you support, so their voices help shape how services work

What we’re looking for

  • Lived experience of at least three of the following: homelessness, substance use, mental health challenges, contact with the criminal justice system, or domestic abuse
  • Experience of peer support as a volunteer
  • An understanding of professional boundaries, including when working alone in the community
  • A warm, non-judgmental approach and a commitment to building trust and hope
  • Calm under pressure, and good at working as part of a team
  • Confident communication skills and basic IT skills
  • Knowledge of your local area and its community networks

TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

· To engage individuals experiencing multiple disadvantage, with the aim of exploring their needs, and engaging them with the wider MDT.

· To provide a friendly and consistent space including 1:1 and group activities for individuals to engage in an informal way which is not overtly addressing recovery needs.

· To work alongside other professionals in the MDT to provide support to named individuals as part of a coordinated support plan.

· To utilise their own personal experiences of homelessness, domestic abuse, substance misuse, mental health difficulties or contact with the criminal justice system to communicate with individuals, aid their engagement, show empathy and act as a role model.

· To work closely with community-based projects and local facilitators in supporting engagement in focused activities.

· Working creatively to target individuals who may not be in touch with mainstream services, those isolated in communities, unaware of services, or who do not feel services are for them.

· To undertake a training programme to develop skills and abilities required and actively taking part in their own personal development plan.

· To attend team meetings/group supervision with the aim of sharing good practice and finding solutions.

· To gain feedback from individuals on their experience of services and feedback to the central programme team, either formally, as case studies or as informal feedback.

· To keep case notes and share data as appropriate in accordance with GDPR.

What you’ll get from us

You’ll be supported by a Lead Peer Navigator. You’ll also get a full training programme, your own development plan, and regular reflective practice supervision. We’ll invest in you.

At Seaview, we believe that with the right support, people can achieve their full potential. That includes the people on our team.

General Terms of Reference

  • You will participate in appraisal, training and supervision processes.
  • You will keep abreast of developments in services and practice relevant to the client group.

  • You will contribute to maintaining safe systems of work and a safe environment.

  • You will ensure that safeguarding and risk concerns are shared in line with inter agency data sharing protocol, Caldicott’s principles and GDPR.
