People & Capability Manager

Mitre 10 MEGA Ferrymead, Prestons & Trade

Are you an experienced people leader who thrives on accountability, performance, leadership development, and building high-performing teams?

AEC Hardware, proudly operating Mitre 10 MEGA Ferrymead, Mitre 10 MEGA Prestons and our Trade business, is seeking an exceptional People & Capability Manager to lead our people strategy, employment relations, leadership capability, and organisational performance across the business.

This is not a traditional HR role.

This is a hands-on leadership position designed for someone who is driving accountability, supporting leaders to lift performance, and creating a consistent people culture across multiple sites.

About the Role

Reporting directly to the CEO and working closely with the Member Principal, you will lead all People & Capability functions across our Ferrymead, Prestons and Trade operations.

Supported by two direct reports, you will lead the People & Capability function and be responsible for creating the leadership, training and people frameworks that enable our managers and teams to succeed. This is an opportunity to build capability at scale and leave a lasting impact on the future of our business.

Your focus will include:

  • Coaching and developing managers to confidently lead their teams.
  • Building leadership capability across retail, trade, finance, inventory, merchandise, marketing and operations.
  • Ensuring employment compliance, policy governance and documentation standards.
  • Overseeing recruitment, training, health & safety, payroll administration and people operations.
  • Creating and implementing SOPs, training frameworks and development pathways.
  • Identifying leadership gaps, cultural risks and capability opportunities.
  • Driving consistency across all business locations.
  • Leading disciplinary, performance management, investigations and employment relations matters.

What Success Looks Like

You'll be the person leaders turn to when people challenges arise.

Success in this role means:

  • Strong and timely management of employment relations matters.
  • Increased capability and confidence across our leadership team.
  • Reduced escalation of people issues to senior management.
  • High levels of compliance across People & Capability and Health & Safety.
  • Improved team engagement and retention.
  • Clear standards, accountability and consistency across the business.

About You

You are an experienced People & Capability, HR, Operations, or Leadership professional who combines strong commercial judgement with a practical, hands-on approach.

You'll bring:

  • Strong employment relations knowledge.
  • Confidence leading difficult conversations and addressing underperformance.
  • Exceptional coaching and leadership development skills.
  • Excellent communication and influencing abilities.
  • A visible leadership style and willingness to spend time in operational environments.
  • The ability to challenge constructively while maintaining strong working relationships.
  • Strong organisational and problem-solving skills.
  • Proven experience handling disciplinary and performance management processes.

Why Join Us?

This is an opportunity to shape the future capability of one of New Zealand's leading Mitre 10 businesses.

You'll have the autonomy to make a real impact by:

  • Building leadership capability across the organisation.
  • Influencing business performance through people and culture.
  • Leading transformational people initiatives.
  • Working alongside an experienced executive leadership team.
  • Contributing to the ongoing growth and success of our Ferrymead, Prestons and Trade businesses.

Role Details

  • Full-time position
  • Monday to Friday roster
  • Monthly rotational weekend duty requirement
  • Travel between Ferrymead, Prestons and Trade locations required
  • Competitive remuneration package available based on experience.
