What they need
Personal Trainer Needed. Full time. Starting 2nd November.
Are you after a career in fitness rather than another short term gym job?
The Right Fit is hiring a new Personal trainer to start on Monday 2nd November. We have four Auckland studios, in Epsom, Remuera, Ponsonby and Takapuna. You will complete your initial training with us first, then we will place you at the studio that suits you and the team best.
Who we are
We help busy people, especially those over 40, get fit in a way that actually fits their lives. Many of our clients are returning to exercise after years away, training around an injury or health condition, or starting again after having children. There is no judgment in our studios and no ego. Our values are Family, First and Forever, and we hire people who already live them.
Why life experience counts here
Our clients are adults with jobs, families and real pressures. They respond to trainers who have lived a bit, who listen properly and who can hold a genuine conversation. Some of our best trainers came to us from hospitality, teaching, nursing, the trades, the armed forces, retail management and full time parenting. If personal training is your second or third career, that is an advantage here, not a gap in your CV.
What the job actually looks like
Most days start at 6am. You will deliver a mix of one on one, two on one and group training, so your day has real variety rather than the same block repeated. Our trainers generally work five mornings and three evenings each week, with a proper break through the middle of the day. The early starts are real, so go in with your eyes open, but the trade off is a roster you can plan your life around.
Qualifications and training
You will need a recognised personal training qualification, such as the New Zealand Certificate in Exercise (Level 4) or equivalent. If you are part way through your study, talk to us anyway. From there we invest heavily in you. Our 16 week training programme takes you well beyond the certificate and into the way we actually coach, and trainers who arrive with solid experience can fast track through the early stages.
What you will earn
You start on $28.50 per hour with a guaranteed minimum of 30 hours per week, so your income is steady from your very first week. Most of our trainers work more than 30 hours. After your initial training your rate moves to $31 per hour, and once you are established as a consistent, competent trainer you move to $34 per hour, and from there to $36 per hour. On top of that you earn individual commissions on renewals and upgrades, with annual pay reviews. Longer term, trainers who have built a strong client base move on to setting their own rates.
You will see personal trainer roles advertised at $60 or more per hour. Those are almost always contractor rates, where you rent your space, find your own clients, and pay your own tax, ACC, insurance and marketing. You earn nothing when a client cancels or when you take a holiday. Here you are employed. Your 30 hours are guaranteed, your leave is paid, your overheads are ours, and the clients come to you. Compare what actually lands in your account each month, not the headline rate.
How we look after you
- Four weeks paid annual leave
- Ten sick days, three bereavement days and two mental health days every year
- Monthly counselling sessions paid for by the company
- A $200 per month education supplement for courses, certifications or personal development
- First Aid and boxing course fees covered
- No overheads, because we handle tax, insurance, rent and marketing so you can concentrate on your clients
Where this leads
Every trainer meets weekly with Carl Bekker, our Trainer Manager and Head of HR, for one to one mentoring. Carl sits down with all of our staff, so your development is never left to chance or to how busy your studio happens to be that week. Alongside that you get ongoing advanced training and a proven pathway to either studio ownership within five years or a specialist trainer role. Your choice. There are also opportunities to invest in new studios or to access funding to open your own.
Who we are looking for
- Someone who genuinely wants to help people, particularly the over 40s, make lasting change
- Someone building a long career with us rather than passing through
- Reliable, coachable and keen to make the most of weekly mentoring
- A recognised personal training qualification, or study well under way
- A current First Aid and CPR certificate, or the willingness to get one, and we cover the cost
- Confident, professional communication with clients in spoken and written English
- A full driver licence or reliable access to transport, as you could be placed at any of our four studios
- Happy with 6am starts, and available across five mornings and three evenings a week
- Available to start on 2nd November
