Phlebotomist

Role & responsibilities

• Perform venipuncture and capillary puncture procedures to collect blood specimens from patients.
• Verify patient identity and confirm test orders before proceeding with blood collection.
• Ensure proper patient identification and specimen labeling to maintain sample integrity and traceability.
• Provide clear instructions to patients regarding the blood collection process and address any concerns or questions they may have.
• Maintain a clean and organized work area, including disinfecting equipment and disposing of biohazardous waste according to established protocols.
• Utilize appropriate techniques to minimize patient discomfort and ensure a positive experience during blood collection.
• Adhere to infection control practices and safety guidelines to prevent exposure to bloodborne pathogens and ensure the safety of both patients and staff.
• Follow established procedures for specimen handling, transportation, and storage to maintain sample quality and integrity.
• Document all blood collection procedures, including patient information, test orders, and any complications or adverse events encountered.
• Collaborate with laboratory staff and other healthcare professionals to ensure timely and accurate processing of specimens and delivery of test results.

Preferred candidate profile

• Diploma or equivalent required; certification in phlebotomy preferred.
• Proven experience performing venipuncture and capillary puncture procedures in a healthcare setting.
• Strong knowledge of phlebotomy techniques, equipment, and safety procedures.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with patients and healthcare team members.
• Attention to detail and accuracy in specimen labeling, documentation, and record-keeping.
• Ability to work efficiently and effectively in a fast-paced environment, prioritizing tasks and managing workload to meet deadlines.
• Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities and patient needs.
• Commitment to maintaining patient confidentiality and upholding ethical standards in all aspects of work.
