Phlebotomist

Job Summary

Los Angeles General Medical Center is seeking a detail-oriented and compassionate Phlebotomist to collect blood specimens and support laboratory testing for patient care. The successful candidate will help ensure accurate specimen identification, proper handling, and timely delivery while maintaining patient comfort, confidentiality, and safety. This role is suited to someone who works carefully under pressure and communicates professionally with patients, nurses, and laboratory personnel.

Responsibilities

• Verify patient identities and laboratory orders before collecting specimens.
• Perform venipuncture and other approved blood collection procedures.
• Explain collection procedures to patients and help them feel comfortable.
• Label blood specimens accurately at the point of collection.
• Transport, store, and process specimens according to laboratory protocols.
• Maintain accurate collection records and document any collection issues.
• Follow infection prevention, bloodborne pathogen, and sharps safety procedures.
• Clean and disinfect collection areas and equipment between patients.
• Monitor collection supplies and report shortages when necessary.
• Communicate with nurses, physicians, and laboratory staff regarding specimen concerns.
• Protect patient privacy and comply with applicable confidentiality requirements.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Phlebotomy training or completion of an appropriate phlebotomy program.
• Current California-required phlebotomy certification or license appropriate to the position.
• Previous clinical or hospital phlebotomy experience is preferred.
• Knowledge of venipuncture, specimen handling, patient identification, and infection control.
• Strong attention to detail and professional communication skills.
• Ability to work with patients from diverse backgrounds.
• Ability to stand for extended periods and follow hospital safety procedures.

Pay: $25.00 - $30.00 per hour

Expected hours: 36.0 per week
