Pipe Layer

Overview

The Pipe Layer is responsible for installing underground utility piping systems, including storm drainage, sanitary sewer, and water lines, according to construction plans, specifications, and project requirements. This position works closely with equipment operators, pipe foremen, and other crew members to ensure accurate installation, proper grades, safe working conditions, and quality workmanship.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Install underground storm sewer, sanitary sewer, water lines, and associated utility structures.
• Read and interpret construction plans, utility drawings, and pipe profiles.
• Assist with setting pipe elevations, line, and grade using laser levels, grade rods, and other surveying equipment.
• Prepare trenches, bedding, and pipe foundations for proper installation.
• Install pipe, fittings, valves, manholes, inlets, and other utility components.
• Ensure proper pipe alignment, slope, joint connections, and elevations.
• Check pipe bedding, backfill, and compaction requirements.
• Work safely around excavators, loaders, trench boxes, and other construction equipment.
• Follow OSHA requirements and company safety procedures, including trenching and excavation safety.
• Identify and report underground utility conflicts, unsuitable soils, damaged materials, and installation issues.
• Assist with testing, inspections, and quality control documentation as required.
• Maintain a clean and organized work area and properly care for tools and equipment.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the pipe foreman or superintendent.

Qualifications

• Previous experience installing underground utilities preferred.
• Knowledge of storm sewer, sanitary sewer, and water line installation procedures.
• Ability to read and understand construction plans and specifications.
• Familiarity with pipe lasers, grade rods, trench boxes, and pipe installation tools.
• Understanding of trench safety, excavation hazards, and proper PPE requirements.
• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
• Ability to communicate effectively and work as part of a construction crew.
• Valid driver’s license preferred.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to perform physical labor, including lifting, bending, kneeling, and standing for extended periods.
• Ability to lift and carry construction materials and tools as required.
• Ability to work safely in and around active construction sites and heavy equipment.

Performance Expectations

• Install pipe accurately and according to approved plans and specifications.
• Maintain required line, grade, slope, and joint integrity.
• Follow all safety procedures and immediately report unsafe conditions.
• Complete assigned work efficiently while maintaining quality standards.
• Maintain good communication with the foreman, equipment operators, and crew members.
• Minimize rework, material waste, and installation errors.

Work Environment: Outdoor construction sites, underground utility excavations, and active civil construction projects.

Pay: $28.00 - $29.00 per hour
