CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

This is the journey level classification for the IT Technician series. Incumbent performs installation, maintenance and repair of hardware, software, web applications and/or communications systems, and provides technical expertise for those systems. The incumbent in this classification is expected to perform a full range of duties with limited instruction from supervisors. Work is evaluated according to completion of goals, timeliness and accuracy.

Essential Functions Installs, maintains and repairs new components, equipment, communications systems, operating systems, hardware, software, network access to personal computers.

Monitors website operations and performance. Assists with developing and deploying web applications. Creates and modifies web content and reviews web content submitted by other departments.

May estimate cost of parts and repairs. Orders parts and equipment.

Performs repair and maintenance of web applications, including on-site and remote user support. Troubleshoots hardware and software problems and performs corrective action.

Notifies system managers and customers regarding operating problems.

May participate website planning, implementation and special projects.

Installs, moves and removes equipment.

Qualification Guidelines

Any combination of education and/or experience that has provided that knowledge, skill and abilities necessary for acceptable job performance such as: High school diploma or equivalent, and vocational/technical training in computer science, electronics and/or telecommunications, and two years related work experience. Web support experience required. Knowledge, Skills And Abilities Considerable knowledge of principles and practices regarding computer hardware and software with an emphasis in diagnostic and troubleshooting techniques related to web support. Considerable knowledge of hardware and software used by city departments. Knowledge of HTML, XML, Photoshop, Perl, and JavaScript required. Knowledge of Ektron CMS 400.net, Macromedia Flash, Adobe, Dream Weaver, Illustrator, SQL, CGI and Style Sheets desired.

Skill in installing, diagnosing and troubleshooting computer hardware and software.

Ability to utilize technical knowledge and tools needed for repair and maintenance of data processing, central computer, communications, network and telephony equipment; evaluate and resolve technical operating problems using established criteria; advise system users how to apply policies, procedures and standards to specific situations; establish effective working relationships and communicate effectively both orally and in writing with other technicians, vendor support personnel, customer department management and staff; create narrative and technical reports. Ability to learn and adapt to new technologies. Ability to prioritize work requests.

Ability to use common hand tools, testing instruments and specialized tools associated with hardware installation and repair. Ability to exert moderate physical effort, typically involving a combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling; physical strength and agility to lift up to 40 lbs, bend in all directions, squeeze with arms and hands, pull and lower up to 40 lbs. Ability to coordinate eyes, hands, feet and limbs in performing movements requiring skill and training, such as operating equipment. Ability to sustain prolonged visual concentration.

There is currently one part-time vacancy in the Information Services/Library Department. Probationary work test period is one year.

Special Requirements

Possession of a valid Class C California driver’s license is required at time of appointment and as a condition of continued employment. Work may be required on evenings, weekends and holidays.

Possession of Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) certification required by completion of probation as a condition of continued employment.

Physical strength and agility to lift up to 40 lbs, bend in all directions, squeeze with arms and hands, pull and lower up to 40 lbs.

FLSA Non-Exempt

Effective January 1, 2013, new members to CalPERS or an agency with CALPERS' reciprocity or who have more than a six month break in service between employment in a CalPERS (or reciprocal) agency will be subject to the provisions of the Public Employees' Pension Reform Act of 2013 (PEPRA) and will receive the 2% @ 62 benefit formula.

Employees who are current members of CalPERS or an agency with CalPERS' reciprocity, or who have less than a six month break in service between employment in a CalPERS (or reciprocal) agency and employment with the City will be enrolled in the 2.5% @ 55 benefit formula.

All employees are required to pay the full employee contribution to CalPERS.
