  • Work to approved Welding Procedure Specifications (WPSs) and applicable project codes.
  • Perform root, hot-pass, fill, and cap welding as required.
  • Weld in multiple positions and configurations, including 2G, 5G, and 6G, according to qualification.
  • Ensure proper joint preparation, fit-up, alignment, root gap, and cleanliness before welding.
  • Maintain correct welding parameters, shielding gas flow, travel speed, amperage, and polarity.
  • Prevent contamination and defects during welding, especially on stainless steel and alloy materials.
  • Work with pipe fitters, welders, QA/QC inspectors, NDT technicians, and supervisors.
  • Support welding inspection, NDT, repair, and re-welding activities.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Review drawings, weld maps, WPS, material specifications, and welding requirements before starting work.
  • Verify that the pipe material and consumables match the approved welding procedure.
  • Prepare and clean pipe joints before welding.
  • Carry out TIG root passes using proper tungsten, filler metal, shielding gas, and welding parameters.
  • Perform subsequent welding passes using TIG or other approved welding processes where required.
  • Control preheat and interpass temperatures according to the WPS.
  • Ensure adequate argon shielding and gas-purge arrangements for pipe internal protection where specified.
  • Monitor weld appearance, penetration, bead profile, and overall workmanship.
  • Maintain weld identification and traceability in accordance with project requirements.
  • Support visual inspection and NDT activities such as RT, UT, MT, PT, and PAUT, as applicable.
  • Repair defective welds in accordance with approved procedures.
  • Maintain welding equipment, hoses, regulators, torches, leads, and associated tools in safe working condition.
  • Handle welding consumables correctly and prevent contamination or moisture exposure.
  • Participate in pre-job meetings and toolbox talks.
  • Comply with Permit to Work (PTW), hot-work, fire prevention, PPE, JSA/JHA, and other HSE requirements.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area and properly dispose of welding waste.

MULTI-CODED REQUIREMENT

A multi-coded pipe welder may be qualified to work under more than one applicable code or specification, depending on project requirements, such as:

  • ASME Section IX – Welding and Brazing Qualifications
  • ASME B31.3 – Process Piping
  • ASME B31.4 – Pipeline Transportation Systems for Liquids
  • ASME B31.8 – Gas Transmission and Distribution Piping
  • API 1104 – Welding of Pipelines and Related Facilities
  • Other client- or project-specific welding codes and standards

Actual qualification should be verified against the specific WPS, material, pipe diameter/thickness, welding process, position, and code required for the job.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Recognized pipe welding trade qualification or certification.
  • Valid qualification/certification for GTAW/TIG (Argon) pipe welding.
  • Multi-code welding qualifications covering relevant materials, positions, and pipe sizes.
  • Demonstrated experience in oil & gas, refinery, petrochemical, LNG, pipeline, fabrication, or industrial piping projects.
  • Strong practical experience in 6G pipe welding is highly desirable.
  • Ability to weld carbon steel, stainless steel, alloy steel, or other project-specific materials.
  • Good understanding of WPS, PQR, welder qualification requirements, welding consumables, and weld defects.
  • Ability to interpret welding symbols, fabrication drawings, isometrics, and weld maps.
  • Knowledge of welding quality requirements and NDT processes.
  • Strong awareness of hot-work and welding safety requirements.
  • Ability to work on construction, shutdown, turnaround, offshore, and maintenance projects.
