Plant Design Engineer

About the role

We are looking for a Design Engineer to help complete the design and procurement of our first commercial facility. You will work on the detailed design, taking layouts, P&IDs and specifications from concept to controlled documents, and then take that design out to vendors and third-party engineering firms to get the equipment bought and built. As the project moves into construction, the role moves with it: supervising work packages, running factory acceptance tests, supporting installation and helping commission the plant. This is an exciting, wide-ranging role.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and update 2D and 3D plant layouts
• Develop P&IDs from scratch, along with piping diagrams and pipe runs
• Produce electrical one-line diagrams and instrumentation and automation designs
• Document design decisions and translate them into controlled documents
• Deal directly with vendors, communicating confidently about the scope of the project
• Create equipment design specifications and complete equipment data questionnaires
• Prepare bid packages and collect cost data
• Communicate design parameters to third-party design firms for the key civil, electrical and mechanical work packages
• Supervise construction packages
• Run factory acceptance testing for key mechanical equipment

About you

• A background in chemical, process, mechanical or electrical engineering
• At least two years in a design, project or plant engineering role
• Competent in CAD, in both 2D and 3D
• Able to read and work across disciplines: P&IDs, piping, electrical one-lines and instrumentation
• Confident dealing with vendors and external engineering firms, and comfortable holding them to a scope
• Organised with documentation. Specifications, revisions and decisions get recorded properly
• Practical and logical, with a field-engineering mindset
• Able to manage competing priorities and communicate designs and bills of materials clearly to non-specialists
• Self-directed and able to manage and prioritise your own workload without close supervision
• Willing to travel for factory acceptance testing, construction and commissioning, including to the United States and China

About us

Zethos is a growing team of around 20 people. We have developed a cleaner way to recover zinc and other critical metals from electric arc furnace dust, a by-product of steelmaking that is currently landfilled or processed in high-emissions kilns. Our demonstration plant in Bromley is running, and our first commercial plant is being developed in the United States with a major steelmaking partner.
