Platform API Engineer

Job Overview

We are seeking a Platform API Engineer to design, develop, and maintain scalable APIs and backend services that support modern applications and enable engineering teams to build new products and capabilities.

This role is ideal for an experienced backend engineer with strong Ruby on Rails and API development experience who enjoys solving complex backend problems, building reliable services, and creating APIs that are easy to integrate and maintain.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain scalable APIs and backend services using Ruby on Rails.
• Build and enhance REST and/or GraphQL APIs to support applications and product capabilities.
• Design clean, consistent, and maintainable API contracts and backend architecture.
• Develop integrations with internal systems and third-party services.
• Work with PostgreSQL, MySQL, or similar relational databases and data models.
• Improve API performance, scalability, reliability, and maintainability.
• Write automated tests and maintain high standards for code quality.
• Troubleshoot and resolve production issues across backend services and APIs.
• Collaborate with frontend engineers, product teams, and other developers to deliver end-to-end solutions.
• Participate in technical design discussions, code reviews, and architectural decisions.
• Maintain API documentation and development standards.
• Take ownership of technical initiatives from planning through implementation and delivery.

Required Qualifications

• Strong professional experience with Ruby on Rails.
• Hands-on experience designing and developing production APIs, particularly REST and/or GraphQL.
• Strong understanding of API design, backend architecture, and software engineering principles.
• Experience with relational databases, preferably PostgreSQL or MySQL.
• Experience building and supporting production backend systems.
• Experience with automated testing and modern development practices.
• Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work effectively with frontend, product, and engineering teams.
• Strong communication skills and ability to take ownership of technical projects.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working with large or complex API platforms.
• Experience with API authentication and authorization, including OAuth or JWT.
• Experience with background processing or event-driven architectures.
• Experience with Redis, Kafka, Sidekiq, Elasticsearch, or similar technologies.
• Experience with AWS, GCP, or other cloud platforms.
• Experience with API documentation and developer tooling.
• Experience building platform services consumed by multiple engineering teams.
• Experience with microservices or distributed systems.
