Platform Engineer

About Grip:

Grip is redefining cold-chain logistics for direct-to-consumer (DTC) eCommerce brands. Founded in 2022 by former ButcherBox executives, Grip combines advanced technology with a nationwide fulfillment network to optimize the shipping of perishable goods. Our proprietary Smart Logistics Engine analyzes over 25 million data points daily—including weather patterns, carrier performance, and real-time temperatures—to make intelligent, package-level shipping decisions. Grip's Pulse Order Management System (OMS) offers real-time inventory tracking, batch traceability, and seamless integration with platforms like Shopify. This end-to-end solution provides brands with complete visibility and control over their supply chain, eliminating the need for multiple third-party tools. With strategically located temperature-controlled fulfillment centers, Grip can reach over 80% of the U.S. population within 24 hours. Our mission is to empower DTC brands to scale efficiently by providing innovative logistics solutions tailored to the unique challenges of shipping.

Job Description:

We're looking for a Platform Engineer with experience building and maintaining infrastructure, tooling, and backend systems that power our engineering teams and products. This role sits at the intersection of platform and backend work — you'll help shape foundational systems, make key architectural decisions, and build the services other engineers rely on. We expect our engineers to work efficiently with modern AI-assisted development tools to ship high-quality code faster. It's a strong fit for someone who enjoys designing systems from the ground up and improving how things are built, not just keeping them running.

Specific responsibilities:

  • Design, build, and evolve core backend services and platform infrastructure.
  • Make foundational architecture and system design decisions that scale.
  • Leverage AI-assisted development tools to write, review, and ship code efficiently.
  • Own and improve CI/CD pipelines to enable fast, safe deployments.
  • Manage and scale cloud infrastructure using infrastructure-as-code.
  • Build and maintain container orchestration platforms.
  • Design, manage, and secure API gateways and internal/external API platforms.
  • Implement and improve observability — monitoring, logging, alerting, and tracing.
  • Improve system reliability, availability, and performance across services.
  • Lead or contribute to migrations and re-architecture of existing systems.
  • Automate manual operational processes and reduce toil.
  • Partner with engineering teams to streamline development and deployment workflows.
  • Participate in on-call rotations and incident responses.

What You Bring:

  • 3–4+ years of experience in platform, infrastructure, backend, DevOps, or SRE roles.
  • Strong backend engineering fundamentals and system design skills.
  • Experience architecting or rebuilding systems for scalability and reliability.
  • Proven ability to use AI coding tools (e.g., Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Cursor) to ship production-quality code.
  • Strong experience with cloud platforms (Azure preferred).
  • Hands-on experience with containerization and orchestration.
  • Proficiency with infrastructure-as-code.
  • Experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines.
  • Solid working knowledge of APIs — designing, securing, and managing RESTful. APIs, API gateways, and authentication (OAuth, JWT); GraphQL a plus.
  • Proficiency in at least one backend/scripting language (Python preferred).
  • Solid understanding of networking, security, databases, and Linux systems.
  • Experience with monitoring and observability tools.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and a reliability-first mindset.

Nice to Have:

  • Experience leading system migrations or platform re-architectures.
  • Experience integrating AI capabilities or tooling into platforms and workflows.
  • Experience building internal developer platforms (IDPs) or self-service tooling.
  • Knowledge of GitOps practices and tools.
  • Experience with service meshes.
  • Familiarity with message queues and event-driven systems.
  • Prior on call / incident management experience.
