Part-Time | In Person
PlayWell Brooklyn | Gowanus
Schedule: Tuesday–Thursday, 1:00–6:30 PMAbout the Role

PlayWell Brooklyn is looking for a warm, reliable, and playful PlayCoach to join our team.

PlayCoaches help create the welcoming, inclusive, and playful environment that families experience every day at PlayWell. This role is a mix of working with children, supporting families, helping at the front desk, and keeping the playspace running smoothly.

Because PlayWell is a sensory-focused and inclusive playspace, PlayCoaches are expected to learn the basics of sensory play, child-led engagement, and neuroaffirming ways of supporting children with different abilities, communication styles, and needs.

We are looking for someone who enjoys working with children, connects easily with families, takes initiative, and is comfortable jumping in wherever support is needed.

What You’ll Do

  • Welcome children, families, caregivers, and guests into the space
  • Engage with children during open play and encourage fun, child-led exploration
  • Support children with different sensory, developmental, and communication needs in a respectful and inclusive way
  • Help create obstacle courses, sensory activities, crafts, and simple play experiences
  • Learn how to safely use and reset PlayWell’s sensory gym equipment and swings
  • Support the safety and overall flow of the gym during open play and programming
  • Assist with family check-ins, bookings, waivers, payments, and questions using Sawyer
  • Help families understand PlayWell’s classes, memberships, passes, events, parties, and other offerings
  • Answer phone calls and emails in a warm and professional way
  • Assist with classes, field trips, events, and other special programming as needed
  • Help keep the gym, front desk, and shared spaces clean, organized, stocked, and ready for families
  • Complete closing responsibilities and help reset the space at the end of the day
  • Communicate safety concerns, incidents, family needs, and important updates to the team

Required Qualifications

  • Consistent availability Tuesday–Thursday from 1:00–6:30 PM
  • Comfortable and confident interacting with children and families
  • Warm, patient, and respectful when working with children of different ages, abilities, communication styles, and needs
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to consistently follow through on responsibilities
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Comfortable working in a busy, active, family-centered environment
  • Able to move between hands-on play, customer service, front desk responsibilities, and general space upkeep throughout a shift
  • Willing to learn PlayWell’s sensory equipment, safety procedures, programming, and family policies
  • Comfortable learning and using digital tools for scheduling, customer service, and team communication
  • Able to work collaboratively as part of a small team while also taking initiative when needed
  • Attentive to safety, cleanliness, organization, and daily details

Preferred Experience & Skills

  • Previous experience working with children, families, or in a customer-facing role
  • Background in childcare, education, recreation, hospitality, events, front desk support, or family programming
  • Interest or experience in child development, sensory play, inclusive spaces, or play-based learning
  • Experience or interest in visual arts, crafts, or creative activity planning
  • Experience with social media, content creation, or basic digital marketing
  • Creative and comfortable contributing ideas for activities, themed events, displays, or other playful experiences
  • Experience using a POS, booking, scheduling, or customer management system, such as Sawyer or a similar platform
  • Familiarity with Google Workspace, including Gmail, Google Docs, Sheets, and Drive
  • Familiarity with Canva for simple signs, flyers, activity materials, or social media graphics
  • Comfortable using WhatsApp for team communication and day-to-day updates
  • CPR/First Aid certification is a plus but not required

Schedule

This position provides consistent weekday afternoon and closing coverage:

Tuesday: 1:00–6:30 PM
Wednesday: 1:00–6:30 PM
Thursday: 1:00–6:30 PM

This is approximately 16.5 hours per week, and applicants should be able to reliably commit to these shifts.

Additional hours may occasionally be available depending on programming and coverage needs.

Optional Weekend Opportunities

Weekend availability is not required, but PlayCoaches may occasionally have the opportunity to pick up additional hours for:

  • Birthday parties
  • Themed open play
  • Special events
  • Pop-up classes and activities

Ideal Candidate

The ideal PlayCoach is someone who enjoys being around children and families and understands the importance of creating a space that feels safe, welcoming, inclusive, and fun.

This person should be comfortable moving between different parts of the role, whether that means greeting families at the front desk, helping reset the gym, supporting open play, creating a sensory or art activity, assisting with a birthday party, or making sure the space is clean and ready for the next group.

A strong PlayCoach is dependable, kind, creative, observant, and able to stay calm and helpful throughout the day. They should enjoy working as part of a small team, be willing to support the needs of the space as they come up, and feel excited about contributing ideas that make the PlayWell experience engaging for children and families.

Pay: $18.00 - $20.00 per hour

Expected hours: 16.0 – 20.0 per week
