Porter – Job Description

Position Summary

The Porter is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and general upkeep of the

building and common areas within the supportive housing program. This role ensures that the

property remains sanitary, presentable, and safe for all residents, staff, and visitors. The Porter

also supports maintenance staff by reporting issues and assisting with basic building operations.

Reports To

● Maintenance Supervisor (daily supervision)

● Property Management (overall oversight)

Key Responsibilities

Building Cleanliness & Sanitation

● Clean and maintain all common areas, including:

○ Hallways

○ Lobby

○ Elevators

○ Stairwells

○ Laundry rooms

● Sweep, mop, vacuum, and sanitize building spaces regularly

● Ensure garbage and recycling are properly removed and disposed of

● Maintain cleanliness of exterior entrances and surrounding areas

Trash Removal & Waste Management

● Collect and remove trash from designated areas on a scheduled basis

● Replace trash liners and ensure bins are clean and sanitary

● Monitor waste areas for overflow or sanitation concerns

● Ensure compliance with building sanitation standards

Building Upkeep & Maintenance Support

● Conduct routine walkthroughs of assigned areas

● Report maintenance issues, safety hazards, or repairs needed

● Assist maintenance staff with minor tasks as assigned

● Ensure lights, doors, and common systems are functioning properly (report issues

immediately)

Safety & Hazard Reporting

● Identify and report safety concerns or building hazards promptly

● Assist in maintaining a safe and hazard-free environment

● Report leaks, spills, or damages immediately to maintenance or supervision

● Support emergency response procedures when needed

Resident & Staff Interaction

● Maintain a professional and respectful relationship with residents and staff

● Provide general assistance when appropriate and within job scope

● Support a positive and safe living environment

Compliance & Standards

● Follow all agency policies, safety procedures, and sanitation guidelines

● Maintain cleanliness standards required by housing regulations

● Participate in building inspections as needed

● Follow directions from maintenance leadership and program administration

Qualifications

● High school diploma or equivalent preferred

● Previous custodial, porter, or maintenance experience preferred

● Ability to perform physical labor and remain on feet for extended periods

● Basic understanding of cleaning chemicals and safety procedures

The Supportive Housing Program is hiring two (2) full-time Porter positions, with one opening available for each of the following schedules:

• Position 1 (1 Opening): Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
• Position 2 (1 Opening): Sunday – Thursday, 11:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.

Pay: From $20.00 per hour
