What they need
AmeriCorps members serve two- or three-month terms supporting early learning and literacy across Shelby County. Enrichment Members work with children from birth to age four in early childhood centers, partnering with teachers to identify students needing literacy support and providing targeted one-on-one or small-group activities in phonological awareness, print awareness, early writing, and alphabet knowledge. Outreach Members expand access to Books from Birth by engaging families in high-poverty zip codes and enrolling children ages 0–5 to receive monthly age-appropriate books. Vision Members provide early vision prescreening to identify potential needs that may affect learning. Together, these roles strengthen school readiness, increase early literacy access, and help ensure more children enter kindergarten prepared to succeed.
Member Duties : AmeriCorps members serve in early childhood to support school readiness and early literacy across Shelby County through three distinct roles. Enrichment Members work directly with children from birth to age four, providing targeted literacy activities and partnering with teachers to boost school-readiness skills. Outreach Members expand access to Books from Birth by engaging families in high-poverty zip codes, conducting community outreach, and managing enrollment to ensure children receive a free, age-appropriate book each month. Visionary Members provide children with prescreening to determine vision needs, offering families early screening to ensure children have the vision capacity to read and learn. Together, these three roles create a comprehensive approach that addresses both skill development and systemic barriers—such as access to books and undiagnosed vision issues—helping to strengthen early learning and ensure more children enter kindergarten prepared to succeed.
