What they need
- Strong hands-on experience in PostgreSQL database administration, installation, configuration, upgrades, patching, and maintenance.
- Experience in Oracle to PostgreSQL migration, including database assessment, schema conversion, data migration, validation, and production cutover.
- Convert and optimize Oracle SQL, PL/SQL, procedures, functions, packages, triggers, sequences, and data types for PostgreSQL.
- Strong expertise in SQL query development, query analysis, troubleshooting, and performance tuning.
- Analyze execution plans using EXPLAIN / EXPLAIN ANALYZE and optimize queries, indexes, joins, and database structures.
- Develop SQL, PL/pgSQL, Shell/Bash scripts for database administration, migration, monitoring, and automation.
- Design and execute database backup and restore strategies for production and non-production environments.
- Configure and manage automated PostgreSQL backups, WAL archiving, retention, and backup monitoring.
- Perform regular restore and recovery testing to validate backup integrity and recovery procedures.
- Hands-on experience with Point-in-Time Recovery (PITR) and database recovery from backup/WAL.
- Manage DC (Primary) to DR replication and ensure database synchronization between environments.
- Perform DC to DR failover/switchover activities and validate application/database connectivity after DR activation.
- Perform DR to DC failback/switchover and ensure data synchronization before restoring the primary environment.
- Monitor replication health, replication lag, WAL, database availability, and recovery status across DC and DR.
- Experience with PostgreSQL streaming replication, physical replication, logical replication, and HA configurations.
- Plan and execute DR drills, including database failover, recovery, validation, and rollback activities.
- Monitor database performance, availability, capacity, and health using PostgreSQL and enterprise monitoring tools.
- Configure alerts for CPU, memory, disk utilization, connections, locks, deadlocks, slow queries, replication lag, WAL growth, and database availability.
- Use tools such as pg_stat_statements, pgBadger, Prometheus/Grafana, CloudWatch, ELK/OpenSearch, or equivalent monitoring solutions.
- Troubleshoot slow queries, database locks, deadlocks, connection issues, replication failures, storage issues, and performance bottlenecks.
- Perform database capacity planning, storage forecasting, and database growth analysis.
- Manage PostgreSQL users, roles, privileges, authentication, and database security.
- Implement and maintain least-privilege access, auditing, encryption, and security controls.
- Manage VACUUM, ANALYZE, autovacuum, table/index maintenance, partitioning, and database housekeeping.
- Perform PostgreSQL version upgrades, patching, configuration changes, and extension management.
- Support production deployments and database changes, including deployment validation and rollback planning.
- Maintain database SOPs, backup/restore procedures, DR runbooks, migration documents, monitoring dashboards, and troubleshooting guides.
- Work closely with application, DevOps, infrastructure, security, and architecture teams for database-related activities.
- Provide root cause analysis (RCA) for production database incidents and implement corrective/preventive actions.
- Ensure database operations comply with availability, performance, security, backup, and DR requirements.
- Experience with large-volume/high-transaction PostgreSQL databases is preferred.
