The Opportunity

I'm recruiting for a Power Electronics Engineer to join an innovative semiconductor technology business based in Austin, Texas.

The company is developing advanced power switching technology designed to improve efficiency, reduce energy losses and enhance performance across electric vehicles, renewable energy, energy storage, industrial power systems and defense applications.

This is a hands-on engineering position offering the opportunity to contribute directly to the design, development, testing and commercialisation of next-generation power electronics technology.

The successful candidate will have a strong background in power electronics circuit design, particularly gate driver development, and will be comfortable working across the full engineering lifecycle, from initial concepts and simulations through PCB design, prototyping, testing and validation.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop and validate PCB-level gate driver circuits for advanced semiconductor power switching applications.
• Develop power electronics circuitry for DC/AC converters, inverters and solid-state circuit breakers.
• Carry out analog and digital circuit analysis, simulations, schematic capture and PCB design.
• Build, test and troubleshoot prototype power electronics hardware.
• Develop and execute validation test plans to assess circuit performance, reliability and efficiency.
• Characterise discrete semiconductor devices and power modules using laboratory equipment and testing methodologies.
• Evaluate switching performance, conduction losses, thermal behaviour and overall device characteristics.
• Analyse semiconductor performance against existing industry technologies and contribute to technical documentation and product datasheets.
• Collaborate with internal engineering teams, application engineers and external technology partners to support product development and customer requirements.
• Contribute to technical reports, white papers, application documentation and engineering presentations.
• Provide technical guidance and support to engineering technicians throughout prototype development and testing.

Essential Requirements

• Strong hands-on experience designing gate driver circuits at PCB level, with a thorough understanding of different circuit topologies and design trade-offs.
• Solid background in power electronics circuit design, development and validation.
• Experience working with DC/AC converters, inverters or solid-state circuit breaker technology.
• Good understanding of power semiconductor devices, including IGBTs, SiC devices, BJTs, power MOSFETs and fast recovery diodes.
• Experience with analog and digital circuit design, schematic capture, circuit simulation and PCB layout.
• Proficiency in Altium Designer or similar PCB design software.
• Experience using SPICE or equivalent circuit simulation tools.
• Strong practical laboratory experience, including oscilloscopes, power analysers and semiconductor characterisation equipment.
• Experience developing hardware prototypes, troubleshooting circuits and executing structured validation testing.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with the confidence to take ownership of technical challenges.
• Ability to work effectively within a fast-moving, smaller engineering environment.

Desirable Experience

• Experience with bidirectional power switching technology.
• Knowledge of semiconductor device physics and switching behaviour.
• Experience with power semiconductor device or module characterisation.
• Microcontroller programming and embedded control systems.
• Programming experience using C++, Python or similar languages.
• Experience developing power electronics products from prototype through to commercialisation.
• Previous experience within semiconductor technology, power conversion, electric vehicle systems, renewable energy or industrial power applications

Education & Experience

• Master's degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics or a closely related discipline preferred.
• Ideally 3+ years of relevant industry experience for candidates with a Master's degree, or 2+ years for candidates with a PhD.
• Candidates with a Bachelor's degree and substantial relevant hands-on power electronics design experience will also be considered.
