We are in a period of substantial investment and with that comes exciting career opportunities for the right candidates to join our high performing team.
The role
Join us at Alpine Energy in Timaru as a Power Technician and help keep South Canterbury connected.
Working directly for the network owner, you’ll work across distribution assets, protection and control systems, and associated substation equipment. The work is technically varied and includes testing, commissioning, maintenance, fault finding, network switching and responding to planned and emergency call-outs.
This is a permanent role based in Timaru and an opportunity to bring your experience to a community-owned network where you can continue developing your skills and see the impact of your work across the communities we serve. Relocation and short term accommodation support is available for a successful candidate relocating.
As a Power Technician in our Technical Services team, you will:

- Investigate equipment failures and undertake authorised network switching, isolation and restoration activities
- Use specialist testing equipment to complete diagnostics and verification while maintaining accurate technical and commissioning records
What you’ll need
- A Level 5 Power Technician qualification or equivalent relevant electrical/power systems qualification
- New Zealand Electrician registration with a current practising licence and 5+ years’ experience with HV substation equipment and systems
- Strong knowledge of power systems, protection and control, with experience in testing, commissioning, maintenance and fault finding
Nice to haves
- Relevant HV switching competency or authorisation
- Experience with SCADA, communications and associated substation control systems
- Experience with SEL relays
Making the move to Timaru
Relocating is a significant decision, so the opportunity needs to fit both your career and personal goals.
Working directly for the network owner you'll see the impact of your work across the communities we serve. You’ll join a team with a strong focus on safety, practical development and supporting each other to deliver reliable electricity for South Canterbury.
Timaru offers an alternative to big-city living without asking you to take a step back in your career. With shorter commutes, the coast and mountains nearby, and more room for life outside of work, South Canterbury gives you the opportunity to build your career while making the most of your time away from it.
It’s what we mean by Alpine, where work meets lifestyle.
