We are looking for an experienced and people-focused Practice Manager to lead the management and ongoing development of our busy, established general practice.
This is a senior leadership position with responsibility for the overall operational, people, financial, strategic, and business performance of the practice. Working closely with the Practice Directors you will provide strong, visible leadership while ensuring our team has the systems, support and direction needed to deliver excellent patient care.
The Practice Manager is supported by an experienced clinical and administrative team, including dedicated administrative support, allowing the Practice Manager to delegate appropriate day-to-day administrative functions while maintaining overall oversight and accountability.
About the role
As Practice Manager, you will have overall responsibility for the effective management of the practice, including:
- Providing leadership and direction to the wider practice team
- Building and maintaining a positive, respectful and high-performing workplace culture
- People management, including recruitment, performance, development and employment matters
- Supporting and developing team leaders and ensuring clear accountability across the practice
- Financial management, budgeting, monitoring performance and reporting to the Directors
- Working with the Directors on business planning, priorities and practice development
- Maintaining oversight of practice operations, systems and service delivery
- Ensuring appropriate HR, health and safety, privacy, regulatory and employment processes are maintained
- Overseeing quality, compliance and Cornerstone accreditation requirements
- Managing significant staff, patient or operational issues and complaints
- Identifying and managing business and operational risks
- Leading and supporting change and continuous improvement
- Maintaining effective relationships with our PHO, suppliers and other external stakeholders
- Working collaboratively with clinical and administrative staff to ensure the practice runs effectively
- Effectively delegating appropriate administrative and operational tasks while maintaining oversight
About you
We are looking for someone who combines strong management capability with excellent interpersonal skills.
You will ideally have:
- Previous experience in practice management, healthcare management or a comparable senior management role
- Strong people leadership and HR capability
- Experience managing performance and navigating challenging employment or team situations appropriately
- Sound financial and commercial understanding
- Excellent organisational and problem-solving skills
- The ability to delegate effectively while maintaining appropriate oversight
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Confidence working with a range of personalities and professional groups
- A collaborative, calm and solutions-focused leadership style
- The ability to build trust and contribute positively to workplace culture
- Good judgement and the ability to recognise when issues require senior management or governance involvement
- Confidence leading change and improving systems and processes
- Digitally literate with their finger on the pulse about new tools, including AI
- Experience with Indici (our PMS) useful but not required
Experience in New Zealand general practice and familiarity with primary care funding, Cornerstone accreditation and practice management systems would be highly advantageous, but we are also interested in strong candidates from other healthcare or complex service environments.
What we offer
- Salary of $100,000–$130,000 per annum, depending on experience
- Full-time, 32-40 hours per week
- A senior leadership role with genuine opportunity to influence how the practice operates and develops
- Dedicated administrative support
- An experienced clinical team
- An engaged group of Practice Directors who work collaboratively with the Practice Manager
- The opportunity to lead meaningful improvements in systems, team culture and patient experience
- A varied role within a busy and established general practice
Why join us?
We recognise that great general practice depends on more than excellent clinical care. It requires a well-supported team, strong systems, clear communication and a workplace culture where people feel respected and able to do their best work.
We are looking for a Practice Manager who wants to play a key role in that: someone who can bring people together, provide clarity and accountability, and help us continue to build a well-run, sustainable and enjoyable place to work.
If you are an experienced manager who enjoys leading people, improving how things work and being part of a collaborative healthcare team, we’d love to hear from you.
Please apply with your CV and a covering letter outlining your relevant experience and what you would bring to the role.
Other offers great for you!
