Join Pro‑Type Industries in Sterling, VA—an employee‑centric, third‑generation manufacturer serving aerospace, defense, electronics, technology, marine, and broader industrial markets since 1969. We’re expanding under forward‑looking ownership and seeking a Precision CAM Programmer to elevate our CNC capabilities.

Why Pro‑Type

  • 50+ years of proven performance; average team tenure of 17 years.
  • Hands-on culture where programmers influence process, tooling, and quality.
  • Professional growth backed by paid training and a formal development plan.

What You’ll Do

  • Translate drawings, specs, and 3D models into reliable CAM programs for 3-, 4-, and 5‑axis mills and (preferably) CNC lathes.
  • Create, modify, and optimize programs in Mastercam for accuracy, surface finish, and efficiency.
  • Define machining strategies: tooling, speeds/feeds, fixtures, operation order, and setup approach.
  • Produce operator‑ready setup sheets, tooling data, and work instructions.
  • Assist with setups, first‑piece runs, and program prove‑outs; provide on‑the‑floor technical support.
  • Troubleshoot program, tooling, workholding, dimensional, finish, or machine issues quickly.
  • Continuously improve existing programs for cycle time, tool life, quality, and throughput.
  • Use SolidWorks and other 3D data to verify paths and validate manufacturability.
  • Inspect parts using micrometers, calipers, gauges, and indicators to confirm conformance.
  • Partner cross‑functionally with Engineering, Quality, Production, and the Machine Shop to resolve challenges.
  • Maintain revision‑controlled programs and documentation aligned to current engineering requirements.
  • Comply with AS9100 procedures, customer requirements, and internal work instructions.
  • Keep the work area orderly and safe; support broader Pro‑Type initiatives as needed.

What You Bring

  • High school diploma or equivalent; technical/vocational machining or manufacturing education preferred.
  • 18+ years of age.
  • Experience programming CNC equipment in a precision metal environment.
  • Mastercam (or similar CAM) proficiency; 3-, 4-, and/or 5‑axis milling required; lathe programming preferred.
  • Knowledge of CNC mill/lathe setup and operation with practical machining experience.
  • Expertise in tooling selection, speeds/feeds, fixtures, sequencing, and general manufacturing processes.
  • Manual machining experience a plus.
  • Fluency in reading blueprints, 3D models, and technical specs; strong GD&T application skills.
  • SolidWorks or other 3D CAD experience.
  • Metrology skills with micrometers, calipers, gauges, and indicators.
  • Problem-solver able to diagnose program, tooling, workholding, tolerance, finish, and machine issues.
  • Clear communicator who creates concise setup instructions and supports operators.
  • Strong math, analytical thinking, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to balance multiple jobs in a deadline‑oriented production schedule.
  • Works independently and collaborates well with Shop, Engineering, Quality, and Production teams.
  • Experience in aerospace/defense or within an AS9100-certified environment preferred.
  • Consistent attendance; able to work assigned schedules and overtime when required.
  • Physical capability to stand for long periods (full shift) and lift/move up to 75 lbs, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Perks & Benefits
