What they need

Matan & Co. Staffing Agency is looking for experienced Prep Chefs to join our growing culinary roster for event-based and production kitchen work across Toronto and the GTA.

We staff a variety of professional kitchens and events, including film and television production kitchens, catering companies, corporate events, private events, weddings, commissary kitchens, and prep kitchen operations.

A growing portion of our culinary work supports film production catering and high-volume production kitchens, where Prep Chefs may assist with large-scale ingredient preparation, cutting, weighing, portioning, packing, labeling, and organizing food for daily production.

This role is best suited for someone who is confident with kitchen prep, knife work, food preparation, portioning, organizing ingredients, following prep lists, and working cleanly and efficiently in a professional kitchen environment.

Please note: We are a temporary staffing agency. This is not a guaranteed full-time position. Most work is freelance, part-time, and based on client requests and production or event schedules. However, there may be opportunities for consistent weekly shifts, longer production contracts, and full-time prep blocks during busy film and event seasons.

Responsibilities:

Prepare ingredients according to prep lists, recipes, production sheets, and Chef instructions

Wash, peel, cut, chop, slice, dice, trim, and portion ingredients

Perform high-volume vegetable, protein, and ingredient preparation

Accurately weigh and portion ingredients for recipes and production requirements

Pack and organize prepared ingredients for service, transport, or production use

Label, date, store, and organize prepared food properly

Assist with bulk food preparation for film production kitchens, catering operations, events, and commissary kitchens

Prepare and organize ingredients for multiple meals or production days

Follow detailed prep lists and complete assigned prep within required timelines

Help organize food containers, cambros, trays, sheet pans, and prepared items for transport or service

Maintain consistency when completing repetitive or high-volume prep tasks

Follow food safety, sanitation, temperature control, and kitchen cleanliness standards

Support Chefs and kitchen teams with additional prep and production duties as required

Maintain a clean, safe, and organized workstation throughout the shift

Arrive on time, prepared, and ready to work

Qualifications:

Previous professional kitchen experience is required

Experience in catering, restaurants, prep kitchens, hotels, events, commissary kitchens, or film/production catering is an asset

Strong knife skills and confidence with basic food preparation

Comfortable completing high-volume and repetitive prep work efficiently

Comfortable weighing, portioning, packing, labeling, and organizing food

Ability to follow prep lists, recipes, production sheets, and Chef instructions

Good understanding of food safety and sanitation

Valid Food Handler’s Certificate required

Reliable, punctual, organized, and professional

Able to work independently and as part of a kitchen team

Able to maintain speed and consistency during longer prep shifts

Comfortable with flexible scheduling, including early mornings, weekdays, evenings, and weekends when required

Availability for longer production shifts or multi-day bookings is an asset

What We Offer:

Flexible freelance and part-time work

Opportunities across film production kitchens, catering companies, events, and other professional kitchens

Potential for consistent weekly shifts during busy production periods

Possible full-time Prep Chef blocks depending on client contracts and production schedules

Opportunities to work with different professional culinary teams

A growing culinary roster with ongoing opportunities

Matan & Co. is looking for reliable Prep Chefs who take pride in their work, have strong basic prep skills, can handle volume, move with purpose, and understand the importance of clean, organized, consistent professional kitchen prep.
