Principal Accountant

Description:

This position performs technical accounting duties in support of the city's financial operations.

• Assists in the preparation of annual financial statements, the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report, and the financial audit.
• Manages and reconciles city bank accounts; reconciles cash receipts, credit card activity, investments, and interfund receivables and payables.
• Posts journal entries.
• Audits petty cash.
• Reconciles and maintains fixed asset records for all city assets.
• Prepares year-end work papers for a variety of accounts.
• Processes purchase orders.
• Maintains grant-related accounting information.
• Reconciles confiscated asset funds and property evidence funds.
• Performs related duties.

Requirements:

• Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
• Knowledge of Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) guidelines.
• Knowledge of auditing principles.
• Knowledge of relevant federal and state laws, city ordinances, and department policies and procedures.
• Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.
• Skill in problem solving.
• Skill in prioritizing and planning.
• Skill in interpersonal relations.
• Skill in oral and written communication.
• Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of a baccalaureate degree in a course of study related to the occupational field.
• Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years’ experience or service.
• Ability to be bonded.
