Principal AI Engineer
About Us
Adeia Inc. develops foundational innovations that shape how the world computes, connects and experiences entertainment. Its inventions span a broad range of semiconductor and media technologies, including 3D interconnect (hybrid bonding) and advanced thermal management for AI datacenters, as well as content discovery, personalization, and streaming. These inventions are licensed to leaders across the chip design and manufacturing, consumer electronics, automotive, digital entertainment, and e-commerce industries. Adeia’s innovations enable more powerful and efficient products, and more immersive, personalized experiences across billions of devices worldwide.
Headquartered in San Jose, CA, Adeia is proud to be recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of the “Best Companies to Work For" in 2025 - 2026.
About the Role
The Principal AI Engineer owns the architecture and hands-on engineering of Adeia's AI and automation platform, with a primary focus on production autonomous AI agents. This individual will assess business and technical needs, define the architecture and technical roadmap, evaluate emerging technologies, and personally design, build, deploy, and support AI agents and agentic solutions.
The role requires a strong software engineering foundation combined with current, hands-on experience building production AI agents. This individual will integrate agents with enterprise applications, APIs, tools, and governed data sources to deliver reliable, scalable AI solutions supporting research, R&D, patent analysis, accounting, and other business processes.
This is an individual contributor role combining AI architecture with hands-on engineering. There is no internal AI engineering team beneath this position. When larger implementations require additional capacity, external resources may be engaged, but this role retains direct ownership of architecture, engineering, and delivery.
What You’ll Do
Architecture and Roadmap
- Own the architecture, technical direction, and roadmap for Adeia's AI and autonomous-agent capabilities.
- Define reusable architecture, development patterns, and engineering standards for production AI solutions.
- Evaluate emerging AI technologies, frameworks, platforms, and architectural approaches, and determine where they provide meaningful business value.
Agent Engineering
- Personally design, build, test, deploy, and support production AI agents and agentic workflows, including autonomous and multi-step workflows, tool use, and orchestration.
- Develop agentic solutions using LangGraph and LangChain, Adeia's preferred framework, or lead the adoption of that stack from comparable experience.
- Build the APIs, connectors, and integration components required to support AI and automation solutions.
Integration and Data
- Design and implement integrations between AI agents and enterprise applications, APIs, tools, databases, and governed enterprise data.
- Develop and implement Model Context Protocol (MCP) and other appropriate integration patterns for connecting agents with enterprise systems, tools, and data.
- Work closely with the Principal Data Engineer to ensure agents consume accurate, appropriately structured, governed enterprise data.
Production Operations and Governance
- Establish and implement approaches for agent evaluation, testing, tracing, monitoring, observability, reliability, and production support.
- Ensure AI solutions operate within established data, security, privacy, and AI governance requirements.
Stakeholder Partnership
- Partner directly with business stakeholders to understand workflows, business problems, and high-value use cases, and translate them into practical AI solutions.
- Develop AI and automation solutions supporting research, R&D, patent analysis, accounting, and other enterprise business processes.
- Direct external resources or contractors when additional implementation capacity is required, while retaining ownership of architecture, technical decisions, and delivery.
What You Bring
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
- 7+ years of professional software engineering or application development experience, including 3+ years focused on AI/ML, generative AI, or AI-enabled application development.
- Recent hands-on experience personally designing, building, deploying, and supporting production AI agents, including autonomous and multi-step agent workflows with tool use. Prototypes and demonstrations alone do not meet this requirement.
- Strong hands-on experience with a modern agent framework. LangGraph and LangChain are strongly preferred; candidates with comparable frameworks (such as the OpenAI Agents SDK, Claude Agent SDK, Semantic Kernel, Pydantic AI, AutoGen, or CrewAI) will be considered provided they are willing to adopt Adeia's stack.
- Strong proficiency in Python and modern software engineering practices, including CI/CD, testing, monitoring, observability, tracing, performance, and reliability.
- Experience integrating AI agents with enterprise applications, APIs, databases, data platforms, and business systems.
- Experience with agent evaluation, tracing, and monitoring in production, using LangSmith or an equivalent platform.
- Demonstrated ability to own both the architecture and the hands-on engineering of AI solutions as the sole AI engineer, and to work directly with business stakeholders to translate complex workflows into practical technical solutions.
In addition to the above, we are looking for candidates who:
- Experience with LangSmith for tracing, evaluation, monitoring, and debugging production agentic applications, and with managed deployment of LangGraph applications.
- Experience implementing Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers and agent-to-tool or agent-to-system integration patterns.
- Background in data engineering, machine learning engineering, or enterprise data platforms, particularly where data quality and structure directly affect AI solution performance.
- Experience developing AI solutions that interact with Salesforce, ERP, financial, contract-management, research, or patent systems.
- Exposure to intellectual property, patent analysis, or R&D-intensive business environments.
- Experience directing external engineering resources or implementation partners while retaining architectural ownership.
