What they need

About Chargebee

Chargebee is a leading provider of billing and monetization solutions, empowering businesses with recurring, usage-based, and hybrid revenue models to streamline revenue and finance operations, capture actionable insights, and drive growth. Chargebee is trusted by businesses of all sizes — from AI-native platforms and product-led SaaS to enterprise-sales-led organizations — including Zapier, LegalZoom, Freshworks, DeepL, Condé Nast, and Lambda — and is consistently recognized as a Leader in Subscription Management on G2. Our headquarters are in North Bethesda, Maryland, with team members primarily in India, the US, and Europe.

About the Role

This is not a traditional advisory, implementation, or monetization role. We are looking for a rare individual who is Chargebee's most credible internal and external authority on AI — someone who understands modern AI systems at a technical level, not just at the level of buzzwords, and who can translate that understanding into how Chargebee builds AI into its own product, how it advises customers navigating their own AI strategies, and how it positions itself credibly in a market where “AI” is claimed by everyone and understood deeply by few.

This person will act as the company's AI expert-in-residence: fluent in transformer architecture, large language models, agentic systems, retrieval and grounding techniques, inference economics, and the fast-moving landscape of model providers and AI tooling. They will partner closely with Product and Engineering leadership on what Chargebee builds, with Sales, Marketing, and Customer teams on how Chargebee talks about AI credibly, and directly with customers and prospects who need a genuine expert in the room — not a vendor reciting a pitch deck.

What You'll Drive

AI Expertise & Technical Authority

  • Serve as Chargebee's most credible internal voice on AI technology — transformer/LLM architecture, agentic systems, retrieval-augmented generation, fine-tuning vs. prompting, and the practical tradeoffs between them
  • Continuously track the frontier — new model releases, research, tooling, and AI infrastructure shifts — and translate what actually matters (versus what's noise) for Chargebee's product and customers
  • Advise Product and Engineering leadership on where AI capabilities are heading and what that means for build-vs-buy decisions, roadmap sequencing, and technical risk
  • Pressure-test claims — internal and external — about what AI can and can't credibly do today, grounded in hands-on technical understanding rather than marketing narratives

Customer & Market-Facing AI Authority

  • Act as the senior AI SME in strategic customer and prospect conversations — helping technical and executive buyers reason through their own AI strategy, not just Chargebee's product
  • Represent Chargebee's AI point of view externally — conferences, analyst briefings, customer advisory sessions, and thought leadership content
  • Serve as a trusted technical counterpart to customers' own AI, engineering, and product leaders, earning credibility through depth rather than positioning

Product & Solution Direction

  • Partner with Product on how AI actually gets built into Chargebee's platform — agents, copilots, automation — distinguishing genuine capability from surface-level AI features
  • Evaluate and maintain a well-informed, current point of view on the AI model and vendor landscape (model providers, inference infrastructure, agent frameworks) to inform Chargebee's own technical choices
  • Act as the voice of technical rigor in product decisions — not as a feature requester, but as a domain authority who can distinguish what's technically sound from what merely sounds impressive

Cross-Functional Enablement

  • Head of Product/Engineering — technical sounding board on AI capability, feasibility, and roadmap direction
  • Head of Marketing — content strategy, thought leadership, and messaging that holds up to technical scrutiny
  • Head of Sales — deep enablement so AEs and AMs can hold credible AI conversations, plus direct participation in the highest-stakes deals
  • Head of Customer — technical air cover for customers navigating their own AI adoption and strategy

What You'll Bring

Required

  • Deep, hands-on technical fluency with AI/ML systems — you have built, shipped, or operated real products using LLMs, transformers, or agentic architectures, not just used AI tools as an end user
  • Working-level understanding of how modern AI systems are actually built and costed: model architecture, training vs. fine-tuning vs. prompting, inference economics, retrieval/grounding techniques, and agent frameworks
  • A demonstrated track record as a recognized AI expert — through building AI products, technical writing or speaking, open-source or research contributions, or leading AI initiatives inside a company
  • Ability to translate deep technical knowledge into terms non-technical executives, customers, and go-to-market teams can act on — you can hold your own with an ML engineer and a CFO in the same week
  • Proven ability to advise CTOs, Heads of AI/ML, and other technical leaders — and to earn their trust through substance
  • A business-builder mindset: interest in how AI capability translates into product and market advantage, not just technical interest for its own sake

Background (one or more of the following)

  • Applied AI/ML engineering or research background — at an AI lab, foundation model provider, or AI-native startup
  • Technical product management or solutions engineering role at an AI-native company, working directly on LLM- or agent-based products
  • AI strategy consulting (a Big 3/4 AI practice, or a specialized AI consultancy) with deep technical grounding, not just strategic framing
  • Advanced degree or equivalent depth in ML/AI — or self-taught expertise demonstrated through shipped projects, open-source work, or published writing

Preferred

  • Experience building or shipping agentic AI products specifically (not just chat-based LLM features)
  • Public presence as an AI voice — talks, technical writing, podcasts, or a notable open-source/research footprint
  • Familiarity with the current AI vendor/model landscape (major model providers, inference infrastructure, agent frameworks) deep enough to have an informed, current point of view
  • Experience operating within a SaaS, billing, or monetization context — helpful for translating AI expertise into Chargebee's domain, but not required
  • Experience partnering with GTM or product teams to turn technical depth into external positioning

Reporting & Key Relationships

This role will report directly to the CPO or to the Head of Product, with critical relationships spanning Product, Engineering, and the full GTM organization. Success depends on sustained partnership across:

  • CPO / Head of Product — strategic alignment on where AI capability fits the roadmap, and air cover for technically rigorous positions
  • Head of Engineering / AI — technical partnership on feasibility, architecture choices, and build-vs-buy decisions
  • Head of Marketing — thought leadership, content, and external positioning that holds up to technical scrutiny
  • Head of Sales — enablement and direct participation in the highest-stakes, most technically demanding deals
  • Head of Customer — technical air cover for customers navigating their own AI adoption and strategy

Benefits

At Chargebee, we believe that feeling supported is the foundation for doing great work. We offer a comprehensive benefits package designed to support personal, financial, and professional growth:

  • Health & Wellness: Robust coverage and access to programs supporting physical and mental well-being
  • Financial Security: Initiatives to help build long-term financial stability
  • Work-Life Balance: Flexible options and resources to help you thrive professionally and personally

Chargebee is an equal opportunity employer. We believe that diversity of backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences is not a “good-to-have” but a “must-have.” We are committed to fostering an inclusive workplace where everyone feels valued, respected, and empowered to thrive. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy, childbirth, and related medical conditions), sexual orientation, gender identity/expression, age, national origin, ancestry, caste, citizenship, physical or mental disability, genetic information, marital status, military or veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by applicable law.
