Principal Control Systems Engineer

We are partnering with a highly respected, award-winning engineering consultancy with approximately 1,500 employees and a strong reputation for delivering complex engineering projects across the energy, power, and industrial sectors.

Following several significant project wins, the business is expanding its Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) team and is seeking an experienced Principal Control Systems Engineer to provide technical leadership, support major projects, and develop strong client relationships.

This is an excellent opportunity for a senior engineer who enjoys remaining technically hands-on while taking ownership of project delivery and engineering decisions. There is also an opportunity to move into people management, depending on individual career aspirations.

Key Responsibilities

• Serve as a technical lead for instrumentation and control systems across complex engineering projects.
• Lead the design, development, specification, and integration of control systems for power generation, energy, and industrial facilities.
• Develop and review control system architecture, P&IDs, control narratives, functional specifications, and I/O lists.
• Provide technical expertise across PLC, DCS, SCADA, and associated automation systems.
• Lead engineering design reviews and ensure compliance with applicable industry standards and client requirements.
• Work directly with clients to understand technical challenges, develop solutions, and support project execution.
• Coordinate with electrical, mechanical, process, and other engineering disciplines.
• Oversee technical deliverables, project schedules, budgets, and quality standards.
• Mentor junior and mid-level engineers and support the development of the wider I&C team.
• Support proposals, technical scopes of work, and business development activities.
• Provide technical oversight throughout design, procurement, construction, commissioning, and startup.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
• Ideally 12–15+ years of experience in instrumentation, controls, and automation engineering.
• Strong background in engineering consulting, EPC, or design-build project environments.
• Experience delivering I&C engineering projects within power generation, energy, utilities, or industrial facilities
