Principal Product Development Engineer at NOV

Objectives

National Oilwell Varco Norway AS is seeking a Principal Product Responsible Engineer to join our Fluid Automation team and take ownership of the DORS Automation platform.

The role is responsible for driving the full product lifecycle—from concept and roadmap definition through development, release, and continuous improvement—while aligning the solution with NOV’s strategic objectives and customer needs.

You will lead the implementation of new features, ensure seamless integration with third-party automation tools, and help deliver high-quality process-control software to NOV’s global customers. Working closely with cross-functional teams, customers, and external partners, you will shape the product roadmap, support commercialization, and maintain the platform’s competitive position in the market.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the end‑to‑end development and release of the DORS Automation product
  • Gather and translate customer and sales requirements into technical specifications
  • Design, implement, and test new functionality using modern software technologies
  • Integrate third‑party automation tools and ensure compatibility with existing systems
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional teams including sales, engineering and after market
  • Maintain product documentation, release notes, and technical manuals
  • Provide technical support and troubleshooting for deployed solutions
  • Drive continuous improvement and adopt best practices in software engineering
  • Align product roadmap with NOV’s strategic objectives and market demands
  • Mentor junior engineers and promote knowledge sharing within the team

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Mechatronics, Robotics, Automation Engineering, or related field
  • 10+ years of experience in software development for industrial automation
  • Proficiency in C++, C#
  • Strong understanding of process control - PLC, SCADA, and HMI systems
  • Experience integrating third‑party automation APIs and SDKs
  • Experience with version control systems (e.g., Git) and software development methodologies (e.g., Agile, Scrum
  • Proven track record of delivering complex software products on schedule
  • Excellent communication skills for interfacing with customers and sales teams
  • Ability to work in a multinational, matrix‑organized environment
  • Knowledge of safety standards and regulations in oil & gas automation
  • Fluent in English and Norwegian

What we offer

  • Meaningful product ownership – take responsibility for the continued development and direction of DORS Automation, a solution actively used on drilling rigs.
  • Broad technical and business exposure – work across software development, industrial automation, product strategy, sales, customers and aftermarket support.
  • Real operational impact – develop automation that helps simplify drilling operations, improve efficiency and reduce the risk of manual errors.
  • Influence over future development – identify improvements, new use cases and opportunities to expand DORS across additional rigs and applications.
  • Experienced technical environment – collaborate with a team of software and automation engineers working across software, PLC and HMI technologies.
  • Structured onboarding – NOV onboarding plus an approximately two-week departmental introduction covering products, PLC/HMI practices and software-development standards.
  • Some longer-term workplace flexibility – the role is expected to begin primarily from the Oslo office; the Hiring Manager indicated that hybrid working can be considered once the person is established in the role and team.
