Principal Tech Software Engineer AI - Agentic AI

Location: Lisbon, Portugal / Krakow, Poland

Join our AI Delivery & Engineering team and provide principal-level technical leadership for reusable enterprise AI capabilities. You'll help ensure that agentic AI solutions are secure, reliable and scalable while advancing PMI's smoke-free future.

Impact You'll Own

• Define engineering standards for reusable agentic AI capabilities, improving interoperability, reliability and maintainability.
• Strengthen solution quality through architecture, code, configuration and evidence reviews.
• Guide decisions on agent versus workflow design, asset reuse and appropriate autonomy levels.
• Advance safe, traceable agent behavior through authorization, human oversight, recovery and evaluation.

What You'll Do

• Defining standards for agent and tool contracts, orchestration, state, context, memory, grounding and bounded autonomy.
• Review supplier architectures, code, configurations, tool interfaces and engineering evidence.
• Guide partners on agents, simpler workflows, reusable assets and justified new development.
• Set expectations for action authorization, human approval, safe stopping and recovery.
• Partner with Quality and Testing to assess behavior, grounding, regressions and traces.
• Review operational readiness, including observability, dependencies, recovery and support handover.

Skills And Capabilities Must-haves

• Degree in Computer Science, IT, Software Engineering or a related discipline.
• Enterprise software engineering experience in cloud-native and distributed systems.
• Hands-on enterprise AI engineering experience, including architecture, code, integrations and readiness review.
• Deep knowledge of agentic AI orchestration, bounded autonomy and enterprise tool integration.
• Experience with agent and tool contracts, interoperability, workflow composition and dependencies.
• Knowledge of context, memory, retrieval and grounding, authorization and human oversight.
• Experience with observability, AI evaluation and realistic failure analysis.
• Strong secure software development, CI/CD, testing and reliability foundations.
• Proven technical leadership through standards, reviews and supplier assurance.
• Strong communication, cross-team influence, mentoring and documentation skills.

Nice-to-have

• Advanced study in AI/ML, distributed systems or cloud/platform engineering.
