What they need

Language Table Program Assistants play an important role in supporting one of Middlebury College's signature academic traditions. Working alongside the Language Table Managers, Middlebury Dining, and the Academic Departments, they help create a welcoming, organized environment that encourages language learning, cultural exchange, and community.

This position supports the daily setup and breakdown of the Language Table dining spaces and assists with the self-service dining experience. Language Table Program Assistants serve as ambassadors for the program by providing excellent customer service, maintaining attractive food stations, and promoting shared responsibility for the dining environment.

This is a Middlebury student Level A position paying $14.50 per hour.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the daily setup and breakdown of Language Table dining and food service areas.

  • Prepare table signage, menus, and program materials before each meal period.

  • Welcome participants and direct them to the appropriate Language Table.

  • Assist with reservations and check-in procedures as needed.

  • Answer menu-related questions and provide general program support to participants.

  • Set up, monitor, and maintain the self-service food stations, including the hot food line, salad bar, dessert station, and beverage station.

  • Ensure food stations remain clean, organized, attractive, and fully stocked throughout the meal period.

  • Oversee the bussing station by encouraging participants to empty liquids, compost food waste, sort silverware, stack dishes, and leave their space ready for the next group.

  • Communicate operational concerns or feedback to the Language Table Manager.

  • Follow all Middlebury Dining and Vermont Department of Health food safety and sanitation standards.

Requirements

  • Interest in language learning, multicultural engagement, or international education preferred.

  • Strong communication, customer service, and teamwork skills.

  • Dependable, organized, and able to work independently.

  • No previous experience required; training provided.

  • Typical shifts are approximately two hours and scheduled around meal periods with flexible scheduling.

Student Employment Eligibility:

Unless restricted by certain visa status, all students with an active status for the semester are eligible for jobs on campus.

Students on leave or withdrawn are not eligible to work in student employment positions until the semester in which they return. If you are currently withdrawn or on leave you are eligible to be employed in staff positions.

Some may be restricted due to financial aid status. International students (non-resident aliens) may not work off campus unless they have applied for and received work authorization from the United States government. (An F-1 visa does not give work authorization.) Off campus work study positions are available only to U.S. citizens on financial aid with a federal work study component.

Students are not eligible to work remotely from international locations.

Hour Limitations:

All student employees are limited to working no more than 20 hours per week in on campus jobs during the academic year (this includes exam periods). The only exception is when there is a full week when school is not in session. Specifically: February recess, Spring recess, and full weeks of December or summer recess. During these time periods only, students can work up to 40 hours per week. International Students: Visa restrictions prohibit international students from exceeding 20 hours of work per academic calendar week.
