An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Technical Procurement Manager to support major engineering and infrastructure projects within the UK energy sector.
This role offers the opportunity to take ownership of technical procurement activities, work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams and develop a small procurement function, ensuring critical equipment and materials are sourced, technically compliant and delivered in line with project requirements.
We are keen to hear from candidates with backgrounds in technical procurement, mechanical engineering, supply chain management or vendor management, particularly those with experience in oil and gas, energy, process engineering or other complex industrial environments.
The Role
You will take responsibility for technical procurement across a major infrastructure programme, working alongside engineering, project delivery and commercial colleagues to ensure equipment and materials meet the required specifications, quality standards and delivery schedules.
You will also play an important role in developing a small procurement team and strengthening supplier relationships throughout the procurement lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
- Review engineering material take-offs and translate technical requirements into clear procurement specifications and requisitions.
- Ensure equipment and materials meet project specifications, applicable industry standards and relevant client requirements.
- Identify and assess suppliers, reviewing technical suitability, availability, lead times, quality and delivery capability.
- Work closely with buyers and project teams to coordinate purchase orders and manage procurement through to delivery.
- Manage supplier relationships, monitor performance and proactively address technical or delivery issues.
- Undertake supplier assessments, audits and factory visits where required.
- Coordinate equipment inspections, testing and technical verification with engineering colleagues.
- Ensure technical documentation, equipment certification and quality records are properly maintained within the project document management system.
- Establish and lead a small technical procurement team, working collaboratively with mechanical, civil and design engineering colleagues.
- Support effective planning, risk management and continuous improvement across procurement activities.
Essential Experience
- At least five years' relevant experience in technical procurement, engineering procurement, supply chain or a closely related discipline.
- Experience in oil and gas, energy, infrastructure, process engineering or another technically demanding industrial sector.
- Ability to understand engineering drawings, equipment specifications and technical documentation.
- Experience sourcing technical equipment and managing suppliers throughout the procurement process.
- Understanding of supplier lead times, equipment quality, certification and delivery requirements.
- Experience working within multidisciplinary engineering or project teams.
- Previous team leadership, supervision or the ability to establish and develop a small team.
- Strong communication, organisation and stakeholder management skills.
Desirable Experience
- UK onshore gas infrastructure or other regulated energy-sector experience.
- Familiarity with gas network operator specifications or comparable industry standards.
- A mechanical engineering qualification or a strong mechanical engineering background.
- Experience with packaged equipment, skid-mounted systems, pressure vessels, valves or similar engineered equipment.
- Experience working for an engineering contractor, EPC organisation, asset owner, manufacturer or specialist equipment supplier.
- Senior mechanical engineering experience with significant involvement in procurement, supplier selection or vendor management.
