Product Design Engineer

Product Design Engineer | Remote | USD $50,000-$55,000/year

Upstart AEC is looking for a Product Design Engineer who can move comfortably between product thinking, interaction design, design systems, and production frontend code.

This is a full-time, fully remote opportunity for someone who does not fit neatly into a traditional designer or frontend engineer category. You will work across the full product lifecycle, from understanding user needs and designing experiences to building, testing, and shipping production-ready interfaces.

What You’ll Do

• Design intuitive product experiences from concept through production.
• Translate user needs and business or technical constraints into effective interaction models.
• Build polished, responsive interfaces using React, TypeScript, HTML, and CSS.
• Address loading, empty, error, success, responsive, and accessibility states.
• Create reusable components, APIs, tokens, primitives, and interaction patterns.
• Keep design artifacts, coded components, and production implementations aligned.
• Work directly in production repositories through branches, pull requests, code reviews, testing, and releases.
• Use AI coding and design agents throughout research, prototyping, implementation, testing, documentation, and review.
• Structure complex work for AI agents and validate their output through appropriate human quality controls.
• Collaborate as both a design peer and a technical peer across product, engineering, research, content, and platform teams.

What You Bring

• A few years of professional experience in product design, UX, design engineering, or frontend engineering.
• A portfolio demonstrating shipped digital product work.
• Hands-on production experience with React and TypeScript.
• Strong knowledge of HTML, CSS, responsive design, accessibility, usability, interaction design, and information architecture.
• Strong visual judgment across typography, hierarchy, spacing, composition, and color.
• Experience contributing to a design system through reusable components, component APIs, tokens, or interaction patterns.
• Everyday experience using AI coding or design agents.
• Experience building structured agentic workflows beyond basic chatbot prompting.
• The ability to work independently through ambiguity and carry work from concept to shipped implementation.

Experience with Storybook, Figma variables, design tokens, AI-native interfaces, MCP integrations, automated testing, headless CMS platforms, or tools such as Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, and v0 is especially valuable.
