What they need

Principal Purpose of Job

The Production Lead runs the lines on the shift for the Production Supervisor. The Production Lead conducts shift start-up, assigns people to equipment, checks that every line has the right documentation, and is the first person the crew goes to with a production or quality question.

The Production Supervisor owns the shift, and the Production Lead makes it run minute to minute keeping lines staffed and running, driving changeovers, and handing the next crew a clean shift.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Safety. Safety rules and PPE are followed on every line the Production Lead covers. Incidents and near misses are reported to the Production Supervisor right away.
  • Lines staffed and running. Every scheduled line has the people, material, and documentation it needs at start-up and throughout the shift. Staffing gaps are raised with the Production Supervisor before they stop a line.
  • Documentation. Travelers, print tags, and labels on the lines are correct for the job running. Errors are caught before product is packed.
  • Changeovers. Changeovers on the shift are driven to completion with the correct documentation in place.
  • Quality. Product meets the customer standard. The Production Lead works with Quality on defects and hold and does not run product past a quality concern.
  • Shift handoff. The oncoming crew receives an accurate handoff of job status, open problems, and holds.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct shift start-up and assign personnel to lines and equipment.
  • Adjust personnel between lines during the shift to keep production running efficiently.
  • Carry out instructions from the Production Supervisor and execute the daily production plan.
  • Provide shift personnel with the correct documentation, including travelers, print tags, and labels.
  • Inspect line documentation for accuracy.
  • Drive equipment changeovers and make sure the correct documentation is available.
  • Run the shift break plan.
  • Answer crew questions on production and quality and escalate what cannot be resolved on the line.
  • Work with Quality personnel to make sure product meets the customer standard.
  • Communicate with other departments and with the oncoming and offgoing crews.
  • Support Lean events and the daily Gemba walk.
  • Other duties as assigned by management.

Minimum Knowledge and Skill Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED; associate degree preferred.
  • 2+ years of experience in a manufacturing environment, including 1+ year in a leadership role.
  • Basic math skills (add, subtract, multiply, divide, basic statistics).
  • Ability to read and analyze production reports.
  • Effective analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work with cross-functional teams.
  • Knowledge of PPE and safety in the workplace.
  • Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Passing score on math, attention to detail, and basic writing pre-employment assessment.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work a full 12-hour shift on a manufacturing floor.
  • Ability to frequently walk the production floor and stand for extended periods.
  • Ability to frequently lift components weighing up to 40 pounds.
  • Ability to speak in front of groups and lead shift start-up meetings.
