About Baker & Provan

Lead Production in a Tier-One Heavy Engineering Environment

Baker & Provan is a trusted Australian manufacturer delivering precision machining, fabrication, fitting and engineering solutions to the defence, infrastructure, mining and heavy industry sectors. We are seeking an experienced Production Manager to lead our multi-disciplinary workshop and drive safety, productivity, quality and on-time delivery across the business. Based at our St Marys facility, this is a key leadership position reporting directly to the Operations Manager.

About the Opportunity

This is an outstanding opportunity for an experienced manufacturing leader to join Baker & Provan in a pivotal leadership role overseeing one of Western Sydney's most capable heavy engineering and precision machining operations.

As Production Manager, you will play a critical role in shaping the performance of the business by leading a diverse production workforce across machining, fabrication, fitting and assembly operations. You will have the authority to drive operational improvements, optimise workflow, enhance productivity and ensure customer commitments are delivered safely on time and to the highest quality standards.

Working closely with senior leadership, you will influence strategic decision-making, develop future production capabilities and contribute to the continued growth of the business. This role is ideally suited to a hands-on leader who enjoys solving complex manufacturing challenges, developing high-performing teams and creating a culture of accountability, safety and continuous improvement.

At Baker & Provan, you'll have the opportunity to work on a broad range of projects supporting critical industries including defence, infrastructure, mining and heavy engineering. You'll join a company with a strong reputation for quality workmanship, technical capability and long-term customer relationships.

Roles and Responsibilities

As Production Manager, you will have responsibility for the overall performance of our machining, fitting, fabrication and logistics operations. Leading a team of supervisors and skilled tradespeople, you will ensure production targets are achieved safely, efficiently and to the highest quality standards.

You will be responsible for:

  • Leading workshop operations across machining, fitting, fabrication and logistics activities.
  • Developing and managing production schedules, resources and capacity planning.
  • Driving DIFOT (Delivery In Full, On Time) performance.
  • Monitoring labour utilisation, workshop efficiency and production costs.
  • Working closely with Quality, Engineering, Projects, Purchasing and Logistics teams.
  • Leading continuous improvement, LEAN and 5S initiatives.
  • Managing supervisors and supporting the development of workshop personnel.
  • Ensuring compliance with ISO 9001, ISO 45001, ISO 14001 and ISO 3834 quality systems.
  • Championing a strong safety culture and ensuring compliance with NSW WHS legislation

About You

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • A trade qualification in engineering, machining, fitting, fabrication or a related discipline, or tertiary qualifications in engineering/manufacturing.
  • Extensive experience in heavy engineering, manufacturing, machining or fabrication environments.
  • Proven leadership experience managing production teams and workshop supervisors.
  • Strong production planning and scheduling experience within an ERP system.
  • Demonstrated ability to improve productivity, efficiency and delivery performance.
  • Sound understanding of quality systems, manufacturing processes and workshop operations.
  • Excellent communication, leadership and problem-solving skills.
  • A commitment to safety, quality and continuous improvement.
