What they need
Job Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented Production Supervisor to lead manufacturing operations on the factory floor. This energetic role involves overseeing daily production activities, ensuring safety standards are maintained, and driving process improvements to maximize efficiency. As a key team leader, you will lead assigned production employees and coordinate shift execution in a continuous-process polymer fiber manufacturing environment. The role is accountable for safe operations, product quality, schedule attainment, labor deployment, equipment readiness, cost control, employee development, and clear shift-to-shift communication. The supervisor works across Production, Maintenance, Quality, Safety, Human Resources, Engineering, and material-support functions to resolve issues and sustain reliable operations.
Essential Functions
Safety and Operational Leadership
- Lead the shift with safety as the first priority; model and enforce required PPE, machine guarding, lockout/tagout boundaries, permit controls, and company safe-work procedures.
- Conduct shift startup communications, safety contacts, pre-job reviews, and incident response; document and follow through on assigned corrective actions.
- Stop work and escalate unsafe conditions, quality risks, environmental concerns, or significant equipment issues.
- Maintain high standards for housekeeping, access, workflow, and orderly work areas throughout assigned production areas.
Production, Quality, and Cost Performance
- Execute the production plan by coordinating labor, materials, equipment, documentation, setups, startups, changeovers, shutdowns, and relief coverage.
- Monitor and communicate shift performance, including safety, output, schedule attainment, yield, scrap, downtime, quality, labor hours, overtime, and pounds per labor hour or other approved KPIs.
- Verify production and quality records are accurate, complete, and entered in the designated ERP, production, or reporting systems.
- Ensure nonconforming material is identified, segregated, documented, and escalated in accordance with quality procedures.
- Coordinate rapid response to process interruptions and recurring losses; participate in root-cause analysis and ensure assigned corrective actions are completed and sustained.
- Initiate and follow maintenance work requests, purchase requests, parts needs, and operational support requests within assigned authority.
- Identify practical opportunities to improve safety, ergonomics, quality, throughput, changeover performance, waste, and cost.
People Leadership and Workforce Administration
- Provide daily direction to assigned operators, team leaders, trainers, temporary associates, and other shift personnel; set priorities and clarify accountability.
- Plan staffing and deploy labor based on qualifications, production risk, training status, absences, and operating priorities.
- Coach employees in real time, recognize strong performance, address conduct, attendance, or performance concerns, and partner with Human Resources on formal matters.
- Lead onboarding, task qualification, cross-training, and skills development; ensure employees perform only work for which they are trained and authorized.
- Maintain accurate schedules, timekeeping, attendance, leave, training, qualification, and performance records in designated systems.
- Conduct documented performance discussions and evaluations as assigned, with clear expectations and follow-up actions.
- Promote respectful conduct, consistent application of policies, effective teamwork, and open communication across shifts and departments.
Communication and Shift Handoff
- Lead structured shift handoffs covering safety, staffing, product status, quality concerns, downtime, maintenance needs, material availability, and priority actions.
- Escalate significant safety, quality, staffing, equipment, customer, or schedule risks promptly while keeping affected leaders and support functions informed.
- Prepare clear shift reports and participate in production, safety, quality, and continuous-improvement meetings as required.
- Provide after-hours leadership and escalation support when assigned by the operating schedule or business need.
Decision Making and Accountability
- Accountable for safe and consistent shift execution, labor deployment, employee direction, documentation, housekeeping, and timely escalation.
- Uses independent judgment to reprioritize work, move qualified resources, hold or stop production when authorized, and coordinate support during changing operating conditions.
- Decisions directly affect employee safety, product quality, equipment condition, customer service, production continuity, operating cost, and team capability.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Frontline leadership, coaching, conflict management, decision making, and clear written and verbal communication.
- Working knowledge of manufacturing safety, quality systems, production control, staffing, training, performance management, and housekeeping practices.
- Ability to interpret production schedules, specifications, work instructions, quality data, downtime information, and operational KPIs.
- Ability to coordinate labor, equipment, materials, and priorities in a changing, around-the-clock manufacturing environment.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and applicable HRIS, timekeeping, ERP, production-reporting, and maintenance-request systems.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality, apply policies consistently, and collaborate effectively with employees and support functions.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Three years of manufacturing experience, including demonstrated responsibility for coordinating work, leading employees, training others, or supporting shift operations.
- Experience working with production, quality, safety, attendance, staffing, or performance documentation.
- Ability to work the assigned shift and support overtime, weekends, holidays, call-ins, or schedule changes as business needs require.
- Ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate or bachelor degree in business, manufacturing, engineering, operations, or a related field.
- Five or more years of manufacturing experience, including direct leadership of production employees in a continuous-process environment.
- Experience in polymer, fiber, extrusion, plastics, chemical, textile, or similar process manufacturing.
- Experience with ERP/production systems, structured shift handoffs, KPI management, root-cause analysis, Lean manufacturing, 5S, and continuous improvement.
