What they need

Location: Boston, MA (in person, on the production floor)
Role type: Full-time, salaried, exempt
Works with: COO

About Lumia

Lumia Health makes the Lumia 2, a smart earring that tracks health data. We build it in-house in Boston. Production is growing, and we need one person to run the production line day to day.

We're a small, flat team that values deep skill over titles. Nobody here manages managers.

The Role

You'll run our assembly line, which combines skilled hand work with automated equipment, and lead the operators who build our product. You're the person in charge of the floor, and close enough to the work to step in and show how it's done.

Most of your day is on the floor, leading a growing team of operators: setting the day's plan, training and coaching people, solving problems at the station, and keeping the line on schedule. When the line needs it, you'll step onto a station yourself while still running the floor.

You'll make the calls on hiring, training, scheduling, and performance for your operators. This role leads operators directly. There are no supervisors or managers under it. You'll work directly with our COO and our engineering, supply chain, and quality teams.

This job is a good next step if you were promoted from the floor in the last few years, you're good at teaching people, and you want to own a whole line at a company small enough that your work shows.

Mission

Run Lumia's production line and grow it to full volume at target quality and cost, with a trained team that doesn't depend on any one person. Units leave the line working and stay working.

What Success Looks Like

  • The line hits its weekly plan. Output grows to full volume and stays there, even through holidays and absences.
  • Quality holds as the team grows. Yield stays steady as new operators join. When a defect comes from the line, you find the station that caused it and fix it there.
  • New people get good fast. New operators reach full speed in a few weeks. Every station has more than one trained person. The line keeps hitting its plan when you're out.
  • The floor is safe and on cost. No injuries. Output per operator goes up as we improve the process.
  • You own daily production decisions. Within your first 45 days, you're making the daily production calls, so our engineers can focus on improving the process.

What You'll Actually Do

Leading the floor (most of your day)

  • Direct the day's work: who's on which station, what gets built, and in what order
  • Train new operators one on one on both hand stations and equipment, and sign them off on each station
  • Solve problems at the station the same day, not in a meeting next week
  • Run a 10-minute daily check-in: yesterday's output, today's plan, open problems
  • Step in on a station when you decide the line needs it, such as covering a short absence or showing a new operator how it's done, while still directing the rest of the floor

Running the line

  • Turn the weekly build plan into a daily schedule, and hit it
  • Track output, yield, and output per operator every day
  • Plan ahead so holidays and absences don't put the line behind
  • Keep parts on the floor accurate, working with our supply chain team

Building the team

  • Hire, onboard, and schedule your operators. Coach them, give regular feedback, and handle attendance and discipline, including deciding when someone isn't working out
  • Write and update photo-based work instructions for every station
  • Train a senior operator who can run the daily check-in and keep the line going when you're out
  • Spot strong operators and cross-train them on more stations

Quality, safety, and new equipment

  • Run the weekly defect review with our engineering and quality teams
  • Bring new fixtures and equipment onto the line, train operators to run them, and check they actually save time
  • Own floor safety: lithium batteries, adhesives and other chemicals, equipment, and static (ESD) rules
  • Keep safety and solder training records current for every operator

What We're Looking For

Must have

  • 4 to 8 years on a production floor, including 1 to 3 years as a supervisor, shift supervisor, or line lead
  • You started as an operator, assembler, or technician, and you can still do the work yourself
  • Experience with hand assembly of small parts: electronics, medical devices, or similar fine work
  • You've trained new operators to full speed, and you've written work instructions that a new person can follow on day one
  • You've been on a line while it grew in volume, and you saw what broke and helped fix it
  • Comfortable leading the floor without layers of management around you

Nice to have

  • Soldering experience (IPC certification is a plus)
  • Working with agency or temp workers
  • Lithium batteries or adhesives
  • Running a line that mixes hand assembly with automated equipment, and bringing new equipment online
  • Medical device assembly or other work with strict written procedures
  • Startup or small company experience

Is This Job Right for You?

This is a good fit if you:

  • Got promoted from the floor and like leading a team you can still show how it's done
  • Would rather fix a problem at the station than write a report about it, and don't mind jumping on a station when someone's out
  • Get satisfaction from turning a brand new hire into a solid operator
  • Want to own a whole line, not one shift of a big plant
  • Can handle busy periods where the plan changes week to week

This is probably not a good fit if you:

  • Are looking to build a department or manage other supervisors
  • Mostly work from a desk or run production at an overseas factory from here
  • Want a large support team for planning, scheduling, and reporting
  • Haven't worked a station yourself in the last few years

Schedule and Physical Requirements

  • In person in Boston, Monday to Friday. Your hours follow the production line, since you're on the floor whenever it's running.
  • Some early starts, and longer days during busy periods
  • On your feet on the production floor most of the day
  • Fine hand work with small parts, with or without glasses
  • Able to lift up to 25 pounds, such as boxes of parts or finished product

How We Hire

  • A 30-minute phone call
  • A hands-on interview at our Boston site, where you'll show us how you'd teach a station and work through a common problem on the line
  • An interview with our COO about your past work
  • Reference checks

We move fast and aim to finish the process within a few weeks.

Characteristics of a Successful Candidate

  • Bias to Building: You lead by example and aren't afraid to get your hands dirty. You're comfortable getting into the details.
  • Ruthless Prioritization: You move with urgency and focus on what matters most. You keep checking risks and shifting your time to where it makes the biggest difference.
  • Resourcefulness: You find a way. You get to the heart of a problem, find a scrappy fix that's good enough, and keep the team moving without waiting for perfect conditions.
  • Calibrated Judgment: You know when to move fast and when to slow down. You know what you don't know, and you still make the call.
  • Attention to Detail: You're reliable and thorough. You follow work through to the end, and nothing important slips through the cracks.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Salary: $85,000 to $100,000, depending on experience
  • Equity: $5K to $15K per year, depending on experience and equity preference
  • Health insurance and 401(k)
  • Free Food Fridays

Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States for any employer. Lumia Health is unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa (such as H-1B) for this role, now or in the future.

Lumia Health is an equal opportunity employer.

Pay: $85,000.00 - $100,000.00 per year

Benefits:

  • 401(k)
  • Health insurance
  • Paid time off
  • Parental leave

Application Question(s):

  • Electronics or medical device assembly
  • In 2 to 3 sentences, describe the last new operator you trained and how long it took them to reach full speed.

Experience:

  • Supervising: 1 year (Required)

License/Certification:

  • IPC-610 Certification (Preferred)
  • J-STD-001 Certification (Preferred)

Ability to Commute:

  • Allston, MA 02134 (Required)
