What they need

Organizational Overview

Bridge Builders to the New Generation (BBNG) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving marginalized youth, with a strong emphasis on supporting African American males in underserved communities. BBNG provides holistic academic, social-emotional, and behavioral support to K–12 students who are first-generation, low-income, and/or from racial/ethnic minority backgrounds.

BBNG's Changing the Narrative Project fosters social-emotional learning through a healing-centered engagement approach and restorative justice practices viewed through a community and indigenous lens. Our curriculum is grounded in the Three L Theory – Losses, Lessons, and Legacy – which guides at-risk youth in understanding their collective experiences of loss, extracting valuable lessons for personal growth, and considering the legacy of their actions for their communities. Through collaborative workshops, restorative circles, and community engagement, BBNG equips students with the tools, relationships, and mindsets needed to succeed in education and beyond.

Position Description

BBNG is seeking a passionate, community-rooted Program Coordinator to lead the implementation of the High School/Middle School Scope of Services. This position plays a pivotal role in building a bridge between community and school systems by delivering academic support, social-emotional programming, restorative justice practices, and truancy diversion services that foster healing, connection, and empowerment among students.

The Program Coordinator will conduct classroom observations and 1-on-1 academic check-ins, facilitate “Mindfulness Mondays” and SEL curriculum, lead restorative justice and mediation circles, and provide daily, on-site diversion support to chronically truant and disengaged students using the evidence-based 3L Theory (Losses, Lessons, Legacy). The ideal candidate is culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and passionate about disrupting inequities in education.

Duties & Responsibilities

Academic Support – 20%

  • Provide one-on-one academic support every Tuesday, reviewing grades, academic progress, and overall student well-being.
  • Develop and distribute progress packets with tailored resources and strategies for students, teachers, and parents to enhance academic achievement.
  • Conduct 5–10 classroom observations to assess student engagement, identify struggles, and provide feedback to support improvement.
  • Coordinate college field trips, career exploration activities, and guest speakers to expand students' exposure to future opportunities.

Social-Emotional Support – 15%

  • Implement “Mindfulness Mondays” to introduce and practice mindfulness techniques that build emotional regulation and stress management skills.
  • Design and deliver SEL curriculum that connects students' lived experiences to academic content and fosters social-emotional growth.
  • Integrate the Three L Theory (Losses, Lessons, Legacy) into lessons and student reflection.

Restorative Justice & Mediation Circles – 20%

  • Facilitate regular restorative justice circles to promote open dialogue, build community, and constructively address conflict.
  • Train educators and staff in restorative practices to strengthen school-wide implementation and conflict resolution capacity.
  • Design and facilitate harm, healing, prevention, and re-entry circles as needed.

Diversion Program – Truancy Intervention – 25%

  • Provide daily, on-site support to engage students who are chronically truant, roaming campus, or disrupting the learning environment.
  • Build trust and connection with students while addressing root causes of disengagement through daily check-ins, conflict resolution strategies, and consistent accountability.
  • Facilitate a structured SEL space using the 3L Theory, helping students reflect on personal and academic challenges, identify barriers to success, and develop emotional intelligence and academic motivation.

Parent & Family Engagement – 10%

  • Call or text parents weekly regarding student participation and progress.
  • Share classroom observation reports with families and conduct at least one parent meeting per semester.
  • Create and maintain an annual calendar of parent engagement activities.

Data Collection, Reporting & Administrative Coordination – 10%

  • Administer pre- and post-program student and administrator surveys.
  • Meet weekly with school administrators to review academic and social-emotional data.
  • Track behavior referrals, attendance, and engagement data to identify themes and inform intervention strategies.
  • Maintain program documentation and develop the annual student activity calendar.

Optional Enrichment Services

  • Facilitate Professional Development sessions for teachers on integrating restorative justice practices into the classroom.
  • Support planning and facilitation of the R.I.S.E Conference, delivering trauma-informed, asset-based workshops and collaborative competitions for students.

Program Goals the Coordinator Will Help Achieve

  • Reduce chronic truancy by 30% among identified students over one academic semester.
  • Achieve 75% consistent weekly participation in the SEL intervention space among referred students.
  • Demonstrate a 60% improvement in student self-awareness, emotional regulation, and goal setting via pre/post SEL assessments.
  • Reduce campus disruption incidents by 40% among participating students.
  • Increase academic engagement by 50%, evidenced by improved attendance and teacher-reported engagement.
  • Ensure 100% of referred students complete at least one 3L Theory reflection cycle.

Core Competencies

  • Deep commitment to community service, restorative justice, and educational equity.
  • Strong ability to connect authentically with diverse and at-risk youth populations.
  • Culturally responsive mindset, grounded in an indigenous, healing-centered lens.
  • Skilled in trauma-informed care and de-escalation with chronically truant or disengaged students.
  • Effective group facilitation, mentoring, and public-speaking skills.
  • Strong communication with school administrators, teachers, and families.
