About Young & Healthy
Through prevention, education, family support, and access to healthcare services, Young & Healthy protects and improves the physical and mental health of uninsured and underinsured children and their families in the greater Pasadena area. The problem with healthcare services in the Pasadena area is not one of availability, but of affordability and accessibility. One of the greatest obstacles to good health is poverty. In the Pasadena community, about one-third of the children are in need of the kind of care Young & Healthy provides. The majority of children under age 18 and enrolled in Pasadena Unified Schools live in areas of town that claim the lowest per capita income and the greatest concentration of poverty.
Young & Healthy’s model is simple: people helping people. Through collaboration with other community institutions, Young & Healthy makes it a point to know the community and be known by the community so that knowledge and resources can be maximized among community partners to assist the greatest number of neighbors in need.
Young & Healthy is now sustained by the generosity of a volunteer workforce of more than 350 healthcare professionals, over 125 community volunteers and an extensive network of community partners to provide free healthcare to needy underserved children. These professional volunteers agree to see children in their own private offices, on a rotating basis, at no charge to the patient or to Young & Healthy. Young & Healthy facilitates the delivery of donated medical, dental, mental health and other healthcare services, free-of-charge, to underserved low-income children, ranging in age from infancy to 18 years, throughout the greater Pasadena area. In addition to healthcare support, Young & Healthy offers these additional services to the community:
Health Insurance Assistance – Young & Healthy helps to prepare families to enroll in and navigate the healthcare system by assisting with health insurance enrollment, providing education and instruction, as well as advocating for clients when they have been wrongfully denied.
Trauma Informed Care - Young & Healthy is committed to creating a healthy community for children and families by educating children, parents, and educators on how to become more aware of and sensitive to those who have suffered trauma. Through parent education and professional development for teachers, Young & Healthy staff offers a series of trainings on trauma informed care to the public, Pasadena Unified School District staff and administrators, and others.
