What they need

New York Center for Interpersonal Development (NYCID)

We believe in building community and nurturing personal growth. We improve lives through effective communication, conflict management, social-emotional learning, and youth development. Through our core values of Collaboration, Accountability Recognition, and Resilience, NYCID works to help people develop skills which move New York City toward the goal of being a more civil and economically stable place for all.

Department Overview

NYCID collaborates with interested New York City Public Schools (NYCPS) to develop, customize, and implement self-sustaining and/or funded After School programs. Our programs can be operated in any elementary, middle, or high school, and are designed to enrich students’ academic, social, and emotional development. We work collaboratively with schools to tailor our programs to meet the unique needs of each school and its community.

Our goal is to provide enrichment opportunities that expose students to subjects and experiences they may not otherwise encounter outside of the school environment. These may include arts, STEM, leadership development, cultural exploration, fitness and wellness, and college and career readiness. In addition, our programs offer opportunities for youth to learn conflict resolution, anger management, and decision-making techniques.

We approach our work through a youth development framework, giving our undivided attention and commitment to both our students and their families to foster growth, engagement, and lasting impact.

SONYC Program

SONYC Programs are funded by the Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) and are structured like clubs to offer young people choice in how they spend their time. This After School program is for students in middle school. SONYC offers a wide range of activities such as Dance and Music, Sports and Fitness, Literacy, Art, Culinary Arts, and Fashion and Design. There is also a strong focus on STEAM and Leadership activities which are led by professional staff.

COMPASS Program

COMPASS is also funded by DYCD and serves young students in grades K through 5. Through its network of providers, COMPASS NYC offers high-quality programs that balance academics, recreation, enrichment, and cultural activities to support and strengthen the overall development of young people. Students who participate have the opportunity to explore their interests, express their creativity, and build skills that support their academic achievement, boost their confidence, and encourage personal growth.

General Summary

The SONYC/COMPASS Program Director serves as the onsite supervisor and holds overall responsibility for the successful implementation and daily operation of the program. The Program Director works collaboratively with program staff, school personnel—including the principal—students, NYCID management, and other youth-serving agencies to ensure high-quality programming, effective coordination, and strong advocacy for all SONYC/COMPASS participants. The Program Director will also work closely with the Program Supervisor to oversee the implementation of mental health supports; work closely with the Content Specialist to serve as an Inclusion Coordinator.
