Position Overview

The client is seeking an experienced Programmer Analyst III / AS400 RPG Developer to support and enhance its Vital Statistics System .

This position requires a senior developer with extensive IBM AS400 and RPG programming experience who can independently maintain and enhance business-critical legacy applications, troubleshoot production issues, perform testing, and work with both technical and business stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

• Maintain and enhance the ADPH Vital Statistics System.
• Develop, modify, and maintain RPG applications.
• Analyze existing systems and assist with application design and enhancements.
• Troubleshoot and resolve production application issues.
• Debug applications and perform issue resolution.
• Perform application testing, validation, and quality assurance.
• Create and maintain technical documentation and procedures.
• Collaborate with technical teams and business stakeholders.
• Support enterprise metrics initiatives.
• Provide ongoing support for business-critical legacy applications.

Required Qualifications

• 8+ years of verifiable RPG programming experience.
• RPG experience must include work performed within the last 12–15 years.
• Strong hands-on experience with the IBM AS400 platform.
• Experience supporting business-critical applications.
• Strong systems analysis and design experience.
• Application development and maintenance experience.
• Production support, troubleshooting, and debugging experience.
• Testing and quality assurance experience.
• Strong technical documentation skills.
• Strong communication skills.
• Ability to work independently.
• Must be eligible for Alabama State Merit System employment.

Recruiting Note

The biggest screening item here is recent, verifiable RPG experience. The candidate should have 8+ years of AS400/RPG development experience, and that experience needs to fall within the last 12–15 years. This should not be treated as a general mainframe developer role. The target candidate needs direct IBM AS400/RPG development experience.

The strongest candidates will have RPG/400, RPGLE/ILE RPG, SQL RPGLE, production support, and legacy enterprise application maintenance, with AS400 administration or upgrade experience being a plus.
