We are looking for a leader who develops other leaders. Working primarily through Program Managers, the Programs Director builds strong teams, connects programs, and helps translate organizational vision into meaningful results.

This is an opportunity for someone who combines broad vision with practical judgment, strong relational leadership, and a commitment to creating a community where people can live, thrive, and belong.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Team Development

  • Foster a culture of trust, compassion, collaboration, and shared responsibility across program teams.
  • Support staff recruitment, professional development, and the growth of strong, healthy teams.
  • Empower managers to lead their teams effectively while providing clear direction, support, and accountability.

Program Strategy & Coordination

  • Lead strategic planning and program development, translating organizational vision into clear priorities and sustainable approaches to service.

  • Identify opportunities for program improvement, innovation, and long-term effectiveness.

Program Quality, Compliance & Partnerships

  • Evaluate program outcomes, participant feedback, and effective practices to improve service quality and organizational impact.
  • Ensure programs maintain high standards for safe, respectful services and compliance with applicable funding requirements.
  • Support effective program budgeting, resource management, reporting, and performance evaluation.
  • Develop and maintain productive relationships with funders, community partners, and other stakeholders.

Qualifications & Experience

We are seeking candidates who demonstrate:

  • Significant leadership experience in human services, housing, nonprofit organizations, community programs, or comparable mission-driven work.
  • Proven ability to supervise and develop other leaders, build effective teams, and balance support with accountability.
  • Experience translating strategic priorities into effective operations and measurable results.
  • Strong understanding of organizational leadership, program management, and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Experience with grant-funded programs, regulatory compliance, budgeting, and program evaluation.
  • Familiarity with HUD Continuum of Care programs, homelessness services, supportive housing, or related services is preferred.
  • Relevant education, professional training, or equivalent experience in social work, human services, nonprofit leadership, public administration, or a related field.
  • Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) credential or an advanced degree in social work or a related field preferred.
  • Valid driver's license required.

Essential Skills & Characteristics

  • Excellent interpersonal communication, coaching, facilitation, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Sound judgment, emotional maturity, and the ability to lead with compassion, clarity, and accountability.
  • Ability to develop leaders rather than simply manage tasks.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities while maintaining a strategic perspective.
  • Ability to build collaborative relationships across teams, departments, and community organizations.
  • Comfort using budgets, performance data, and reporting systems to inform decisions.
  • Commitment to Open Door's mission, values, and the dignity and agency of every person we serve.
