Project Engineer / Designer

About Us

ATH Custom Metal Fabrication is a leading provider of high-quality structural steel and miscellaneous metal fabrication solutions. With a commitment to precision, innovation, and client satisfaction, we specialize in delivering custom metal projects from design and engineering through fabrication, delivery, and installation.

Our success is built on the skill, dedication, and performance of our employees. We take pride in the quality of our work and the standards we have maintained since 2005.

As we continue to grow, we are seeking a highly skilled, detail-oriented, and motivated Project Engineer / Designer to join our team.

Job Description

We are looking for a Project Engineer / Designer with a strong background in engineering, structural metal design, drafting, and fabrication, combined with the ability to coordinate projects from design through fabrication and installation.

The primary focus of this position will be engineering and design. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing practical, accurate, and fabrication-ready designs for structural steel and miscellaneous metal projects using AutoCAD and SolidWorks.

This position will also provide project coordination support, working closely with the Project Manager, Production Manager, engineers, general contractors, and installation teams to ensure projects are properly coordinated and executed.

The ideal candidate will be able to take an architectural or engineering drawing, understand the technical requirements, identify potential issues, develop a practical design, produce accurate shop and fabrication drawings, and communicate the design effectively to the fabrication and installation teams.

This is a hands-on position suited to someone who enjoys the technical and design side of construction while also being involved in the coordination and execution of projects.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering & Design – Primary Responsibility

  • Develop detailed 2D drawings and 3D models for structural steel and miscellaneous metal projects using AutoCAD and SolidWorks.
  • Prepare detailed shop drawings, fabrication drawings, and installation drawings based on architectural and engineering drawings, project specifications, and field measurements.
  • Design structural steel and miscellaneous metal components.
  • Review architectural, structural, and engineering drawings for accuracy, constructability, and potential conflicts.
  • Interpret project specifications, engineering requirements, and construction details and incorporate them into project designs.
  • Conduct site visits and take accurate field measurements to develop and verify designs.
  • Work with engineers, architects, general contractors, and other professionals to address technical questions, design discrepancies, RFIs, and required modifications.
  • Coordinate design changes and revisions throughout the project.
  • Review designs for constructability, fabrication requirements, installation requirements, material efficiency, and overall practicality.
  • Ensure drawings are accurate, complete, and meet project specifications, engineering requirements, and applicable codes and standards.
  • Maintain drawing revisions, drawing logs, shop drawing submissions, and other technical documentation.

Project Coordination

  • Coordinate projects from initial site measurement and design through fabrication, delivery, and installation.
  • Coordinate with production, purchasing, installation teams, subcontractors, suppliers, engineers, general contractors, and other trades.
  • Monitor project progress and communicate potential issues, changes, or delays to management.
  • Assist with RFIs, scope changes, change orders, and other project documentation.
  • Monitor project timelines, budgets, production, purchasing, and quality to help ensure projects remain on schedule and within budget.
  • Assist with project start-up and closeout documentation.
  • Maintain accurate project records, contracts, correspondence, schedules, logs, and other documentation.
  • Communicate effectively with clients, general contractors, subcontractors, suppliers, engineers, and internal teams.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Drafting/Design, or a related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in engineering, structural metal design, drafting, fabrication, or construction.
  • Strong experience in structural steel and miscellaneous metal design and detailing.
  • Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD and SolidWorks.
  • Experience developing detailed 2D drawings and 3D models for fabrication.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret architectural, structural, and engineering drawings.
  • Experience preparing detailed shop drawings, fabrication drawings, and installation drawings.
  • Strong understanding of structural steel and miscellaneous metal fabrication and installation processes.
  • Knowledge of construction methods, materials, fabrication techniques, and installation practices.
  • Strong understanding of dimensions, tolerances, connections, and constructability.
  • Knowledge of the Ontario Building Code and applicable construction standards and regulations.
  • Strong mathematical and technical skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities.
  • Ability to visualize how components will be fabricated and installed.
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with project, production, engineering, and installation teams.
  • Strong computer skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing project requirements.

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have a strong engineering and design background with hands-on knowledge of structural steel and miscellaneous metal fabrication.

You should be comfortable working with AutoCAD and SolidWorks, interpreting architectural and engineering drawings, taking field measurements, developing detailed designs and shop drawings, and understanding how those designs will ultimately be fabricated and installed.

You should also be comfortable visiting job sites, communicating with contractors and engineers, working with our production team, and helping resolve technical issues throughout the project.

While project coordination is an important part of the position, the primary focus will be engineering, design, drafting, and technical problem-solving.

We are looking for someone who:

  • Takes ownership of their projects and designs.
  • Is proactive in identifying and resolving problems.
  • Understands how designs translate into real-world fabrication and installation.
  • Can work independently and manage multiple priorities.
  • Has strong attention to detail and takes pride in producing accurate work.
  • Communicates clearly and professionally with both internal and external teams.
  • Is practical, resourceful, and able to find solutions when challenges arise.

Why Join ATH Custom Metal Fabrication?

At ATH, you will be involved in projects from design through fabrication and installation, giving you the opportunity to see your work come to life.

You will work closely with experienced members of our engineering, production, and installation teams in a hands-on environment where your technical skills and ideas have a direct impact on the success of our projects.

If you are an experienced engineer/designer who enjoys designing, problem-solving, and seeing your work physically built, we would like to hear from you.
